Beyond I have some questions

Post by spidermansmum » Fri Mar 06, 2009 1:26 pm

Hi We are currently using Little Hearts.I am a big planner and I like to have things sorted and organised. So even though I have 12 weeks or so of Little Hearts For His Glory left Im trying to figure out next year.
How long does Beyond take each day?My little one has some ADD and Aspergers so keeping him on task is not easy.He does best with short bursts through out the day.
The reading.I know he has months to grow and mature before we start beyond but reading is like watching paint dry some days. Its so slow, others it speeds along.Partly its intrest but mostly he gets very easily distracted by any other noise or activity going on.If we carried on with the reading lesson-would he miss out?
Copy work. This is just scary. He dislikes writing. We made a big mistake. This is my first year of HS and I wrongly bought A reason A -we would have been better getting K but we just shelved it and focused on a letter a day.
- Delighted to have used LHTH,LHFHG and Beyond, Bigger , Preparing and DITHOR
currently Using

Starting Bigger with my 8 y/o About to add on DITHOR
Finishing Preparing with my 12year with ASD/LD

Hi Sam, :D

I am using Beyond this year. We take an hour or less per day, but I do not use HOD'S Language arts or math. I am not counting the time it takes my older son to do the copywork because he works independently on that. I am also not including DITHOR or Story Time. We're not doing DITHOR this year. (next year for sure) and story time doesn't feel like school, LOL;-) So if you added that in I would say at the MOST 1 1/2 hours per day for us, without language arts or math.

HTH,
Mary

Sam,

You may also want to use a handwriting workbook along with Beyond, instead of doing the poetry copywork, if your little guy is still coming along in the writing department. You could pull out your "A Reason for Writing 'A' and do that with Beyond instead. :D

Blessings,
Carrie

Sam,

We'll be doing the same thing with our 6 year old whose moving into Beyond. He's just not ready for copywork, and his fine motor skills are finally coming along (but slowly)! :D

Blessings,
Carrie

Hi Sam!!
you know, something I've done in the past that made the day go faster was break up the boxes into active and passive activities and then alternate. So like we'd do the poem/rhyme and then sit for the handwriting, get up and do the history or science activity then sit for the Bible study, etc. It made it easier for him to sit when he knew it wasn't long before he was getting up again. I've also done a "seventh inning stretch" where we stop whatever we are doing and do some jumping jacks, run around for a minute, etc. I try to only make my one with attention issues sit and concentrate for about ten minutes at a time. That's where I've found his limit to be, anyway. :-)

You must be doing a lot better then me at your daily work! lol! We're still plugging away, but we aren't a whole lot farther along! eh, at least we're having fun, right? :-)

You could also do it half speed for a while if you wanted to.

Just an aside-my daughter has ADHD and SPD and we just finished LHFHG and started Beyond on Monday, planning to do it half speed, and our 3rd day C looked at me and said, "Is that it?" And I explained that it was, and that Mommy was just doing half one day and half the next, and she said "Could we just do all of it please?" She even liked the writing and I totally thought she would balk at that! So I just wanted to point out that even if it is a little longer and even with challenges like ADD and Aspergers, you're little guy may just do really well because it is so engaging.
