New- considering HOD- need help.

Post by FullCup » Mon Feb 23, 2009 8:39 pm

Hello. My name is Dana. I am 35, married for 16 years, 4 kids- Karli (9), Drake (7), Brant (5) and Aubree (1). My kids will be completing this school year and I will begin our homeschool adventure in August. I have decided on a curriculum for my older two, however for my 5 year old I am considering LHFHG. I would like to buy a complete curriculum. I noticed that there are two "packages". Do I buy them both? Or do I have to buy one and then buy add-ons/extras? I'm not quite sure what I need or don't need. I hope that I don't sound ignorant. I actually have been researching for a couple of months now. Every time I think I've made a decision I discover something new and my mind changes. I stumbled upon Heart of Dakota and I am SO excited. It seems like what I am looking for. Considering this is something I never thought I would/could do. It is new and I am so excited. It's like God just put it in my lap all of a sudden and I am ready to run with it. I love the idea of being able to teach my kids about God in every aspect of their lives. It's so exciting to give them this gift. Okay. Rambling now. Sorry. Anyhow- I am looking for a little clarification on what I need to buy so that I would have everything I need. I don't want to spend more $$$ than I need to, but I also want to make sure I have it all because we don't have a very good library. Any and all advice is appreciated! TIA

Hi Dana. Welcome. You will love LHFHG. There are two packages that go together. Carrie tries to give families that need to the chance to economize if necessary or if they happen to be using something else for science. The first package is the essential part of the program, you need that. The second part is for science and devotions. We are doing LHFHG and I highly recommend getting both if possible. It just adds so much. But it is possible to do the program with just the first package. Hope that helps. You will love LHFHG! :D

Hi Dana! I just wanted to welcome you!

I, too, am going to be starting homeschooling in the fall...something that I NEVER thought I would do. But I'm sooo excited! And I was led to HOD, which increases my excitement every time I look at it!

Anyway, there is a little lightbulb you can click on the LHFHG ordering page that gives a few hints on how/what to order. It says something like "Helpful tips on how to order". This is how I understand it:

1. You would first pick the Economy Package you need--either Kindergarten or first grade...they are the same except the K package has 2 Rod and Staff workbooks, and the 1st grade package has the Thinking Skills workbook. This is necessary to the program. It includes your Teaching Guide, History books, Read Alouds, and the workbooks I mentioned before.

2. You choose one of the two Bibles listed, or you can use your own.

3. You can choose a Handwriting Book, or use your own.

4. You can choose a Phonics Program, or use your own.

5. You can order the Basic Package in whole, or just parts of it. The Basic Package has your Science, Math, and a Devotional and CD. Like the Economy Package you have a choice of Kindergarten level or first grade (which pertains to the Science and Math).

Hope I got it right!

Hi Dana,

Welcome to HOD! This is such a wonderful program.... as the other poster said the different packages are for economizing if you find it neccessary. I would highly recommend buying everything you can afford doing so will make for a richer, well-rounded education fro your child.

We are starting Unit 23 in LHFHG tomorrow, so we are well past the halfway mark and are loving every minute we spend doing school. :D My dd has enjoyed all the resources and looks forward to all the activities. I wish there was one thing that she loves especially but she honestly responds to every activity with " I love doing this!"

I'm sure that you and your dc will have a wonderful year with LHFHG.

Best wishes and God Bless,

Nancy
