Yet another Singapore Question :o)

Post by Mom2Monkeys » Mon Jan 05, 2009 2:20 pm

DD7, 2nd grade, is doing well in SM 2A right now. She gets the concepts, can do the work, but I don't think it's really sticking (I think partly b/c mommy stinks at doing the hands on stuff and we don't have the Bigger guide with the 2A/B activities in it). Should she master these concepts first or will they be reintroduced in 3A/B? I've got her reviewing using the Intensive workbook 1A (or 1B?) right now, but I didn't know if I should plan on moving her on to 3 in the fall or take 2 REALLY slowly and make sure she masters it now before moving on. :?:

ETA: She is also doing Horizons 3, book 1 right now...its on the same level as Singapore 2 pretty much, but with a lot more review. I just pick some sections here and there for her to do. (I promise I dont' have her doing too much! She actually likes to get her workbooks out at night in bed after doing her devotional and reading a while :) Weird, huh? LOL

We went through 1a/1b at a good clip, but had to slow it down for 2a/2b and add in extra practice to get it to stick. If you can get the Bigger manual for the activities, that may help.

anyone else?

We're doing multiplication with 3 right now...should she master those facts prior to moving on to the next set of lessons?

She catches on quickly and understands the concepts when we do it...but if we go a little while without doing it, she usually needs a quick review and sometimes a more in depth review. This is especially for anything that has more than 1-2 steps in it (like carrying/borrowing...but she's getting this better now after I finally found a visual/hands-on way to teach it-- I'm still going to have to see how long it sticks if we don't do it a while)

So...Is it okay if I keep going so long as she gets it well enough to do the work or am I going for absolute mastery before moving on?

She'll get the concepts again in 3A/3B, so if she is passing her assignments quite well and is not frustrated on a daily basis, moving on would be recommended. Not all of the concepts in 2A or 2B are to be mastered. Many are only introduced for the first time. We do quite a bit of hand-holding through assignments on concepts that are new here!

When your daughter hits third/fourth grade, it is the perfect time to work on memorizing math facts as well. If the addition/subtraction facts are already memorized, then move on to memorization of multiplication facts. If addition/subtraction facts still come a bit slow, work on those until they're mastered. :D

Blessings,
Carrie

Thanks so much Carrie. What a relief to know I don't have to push memorizing facts right now! We'll be able to focus more on our lessons knowing that :)
And now we know we can keep on moving with skill building and save mastering for later. That's going to save her from some boredom :D
