Binder or Sketchbook?
Binder or Sketchbook?
See, now that Carrie has done all the planning for me, I feel the need to stress over the minutia.
Has anyone chosen sketchbooks for their children's science notebooks?
I realize the advantages of binders--able to add and take away pages, able to work on a flat sheet rather than in a book, able to cover with a sheet protector.
In spite of those reasons, part of me wants to go with a blank sketchbook.
So, what do you think? Binder or Sketchbook?

I like the binder for all the reasons you listed. And my kids do, too. It frustrates them when their paper won't lie flat. Plus, a sheet of paper fits on a clipboard to take with to ice skating lessons, trips, grocery store, etc. and you won't risk losing the whole book if it gets left behind-only that one sheet! Maybe you could ask your kids what they prefer?

I went with the binder because it was in the clearance rack for .50?
But I'm glad I did. its so easy to take out the maps as we add to them ect..

I like the idea of a sketch book for the keepsake value but the practicality of the binder wins out. But here is an idea that I like for myself after having read your question What about scrap booking your best notebooking for a keep sake. That way you can have a nice reminder plus they get review if you have them do it. Ok I have either lost my mind or maybe I need to be cut off for a while. Hehehe! But it sounds good to me. But maybe I am loosing my mind.

I thought the sketchbook would make a great keepsake too. BUT I did go ahead and ask my daughter. She much prefers the binder because she said she would be afraid of making a mistake all of the time with a sketchbook. I see her point.
I also like the scrapbook idea. I think that's what I want...well, something like that. Maybe I can bind the notebook at the end of the year into a kind of scrapbook. I think I will have her use heavier scrapbook paper rather than just copy paper.
So, both responses helped me come to my senses! I think I will now get the best of both worlds. Thanks for helping.

So you are saying that if you do it on card stock you can bind it into a book later? That is a great idea! That way if you want to add something extra in a scrapbook sort of way you can but you can just go ahead and admit fat chance of doing it all now.

We are using sketchbooks. Sometimes they make drawings directly on the page, other times they may draw on a separate page and paste it in. They both like their sketchbooks, they say it makes them feel like "real" artists

Lourdes,
So you kind have the best of both worlds too. Can I ask what kind of sketch books are you using? Or is it something you can just get at Wal-mart. Just thinking this could work too.
You guys are so creative!

Actually, I got them from an art supply website-spiral bound and high-quality heavy paper. The cheap ones don't stand up to paint and glue very well. My little splurge- I'm not that crafty , but I love high-quality art materials and get them whenever I canwater2wine wrote:Lourdes,

I love the suggestion of adding it into a scrapbook at the end of the year. I would make a suggestion that you just keep the best of the year.
This is my logic toward that end.
If I keep "ALL" of it
1. I have to store All OF IT for years and one day I will ask myself .. why am I keeping this??? and toss it all.
2. When I keep the best I can make a scrapbook out of it and continue to add to it as the years go on, without it becoming clutter.
3. I have a few things from my child hood years "I Treasure" them. I also know if I had ALL of my projects they would have hit the trash bag 3 moves ago.
