No Tweaking!

This is where new posts begin. All questions or discussions about any of Heart of Dakota's curriculums start here. If you wish to share a one-time post about your family's experience with our curriculum, you may post under the specific curriculum title (found beneath this "Main Board" heading).

No Tweaking!

Post by Callia » Wed Jan 23, 2008 11:34 am

Hi,

I am a compulsive "tweaker." I was a teacher for a number of years and have always felt compelled to change every curriculum I have ever gotten my hands on. I never rest with the way something is written.

I spent some time last night and early this morning poring over the Bigger curriculum. For a while I really thought I would change out the spelling to another program. I also considered switching out math.

But the more I have thoughtfully considered my life, our time, what I really want for my child, etc. the more I think I might just do everything AS WRITTEN! This curriculum is as close to what I wish I had written as any I have seen.

Okay...maybe I WOULD change the spelling and math a bit. But honestly, in the scheme of things, I don't think it would matter much. Either choice is very, very good and will accomplisht the goal!

AND this way it is all written out for us. I will actually DO this!

Last week I was almost ready to turn my 8yod over to another teacher because I felt I was shortchanging her. If I had, I would have NO say about her curriculum.

This is MUCH MUCH better!

I now plan to give this program a good month with "no tweaking" and see if I can just bask in the ease and simplicity of doing things Carrie's way.

My daughter simply cannot wait to begin. I wish I had ordered everything from this site that first day I ordered. Then we would be starting our journey TODAY!

I think I needed to get that off my chest! :)

Another compulsive tweaker here  I'm am working my way toward using everything exactly as written. I'll probably stick with the math I already had in place since it is working so well, but I am working toward being in the same place with the LA.

This board is a great place to "get things off your chest". Usually someone on here has btdt!

Callia,

I am a born tweaker too, so I know exactly what you're talking about! When I was teaching public school I was always tweaking my own plans, even after they were written.

But, with our guides the way they are written now, I find incredible freedom in just teaching them as is. That leaves me the rest of our day to tweak and add in any of the extras that suit our family goals (which I always hoped to get to, but never had time to when I was tweaking my kiddos academics day-to-day).

So, last year when my husband wanted to learn Greek and wanted the kiddos to start too, I didn't say, "Are you kidding I can't possibly add one more thing to our day!" Instead, I said, "Sure. That would be great!"

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I think your plan sounds great! :D

Blessings,
Carrie

I love to change things and make it my own but I'm with Carrie. It's great the way it is now I just focus on what else matters to us. Like the other day I noticed Hmmm what's on my shelf. Pearables The Narrow Way. Wow let's correlate that to BHFG Bible, perfect fit. Hmm stor time how many BF character training books can I slip in there so we can actually use this stuff on our shelf. Wow what if we did Polished Corner Stones and Plants Grown up on the fifth day. So you get the idea. Thank the Lord my husband does not ask that we teach anything I am not covering except mostly stuff for the future.
