College- If you've been there w/ your kids

Post by mrsrandolph » Tue Feb 28, 2017 4:34 pm

My daughter is just a rising Freshman, but I am wondering about all things COLLEGE!

For those of you who have kids you have homeschooled who are now in college, SPILL IT! :D

What transcript service did you use (if you used one).

What are "must do's" for those of us just entering the High School years.

Things to avoid?

What is your college entry "story"?

Thanks In Advance!!

My dd will graduate from college in May. She was homeschooled for 10, 11 and 12th grade, but not with HOD since high school guides weren't out then.

I use homeschool tracker and that did my transcript for me. My ds will be a senior next year and I may use a transcript service with him, but not sure which one I will use.

As far as must do's I think it is really important for students to learn deadlines and to follow directions. My dd said she could tell the homeschoolers because they often didn't get things done on time because they were used to their parents letting them extend things out and not meet a deadline and also they hardly ever followed the directions because they were used to doing things "their own way". HOD is very good about teaching thees skills. As parents I think we can be too soft with our kids and say things like "well I want to make sure they have time for things they enjoy". That is fine, but we have always told our kids their primary job is school and they need to make sure they do that to their best ability and the fun things come only after they have school done. I also think it is important that we don't hand hold too much. High school is a good time for dc to figure out time management for themselves and see what works and what doesn't. My son has moved boxes around as needed so that if he has a day that isn't as busy before one that is he may do an extra box on the non-busy day etc. I also think learning to manage money and getting a solid biblical worldview before going to college is very important. I love that with my ds he will have this using HOD last guide.

My dd's college entry story is she had a few schools she was interested in so we visited those her junior year. She knew she wanted a college that taught from a biblical worldview and those are few and far between so she didn't have a long list of possibilities. She fell in love with one of them and took dual enrollment online classes thru that university her senior year so she had 12 credits going in. This was important for her because she was a dual major and still wanted to get done in 4 years. I sent her "mommy transcript" and they had her ACT scores(which were very good) and she was accepted and received an academic scholarship. I had course descriptions ready in case we needed them, but she didn't. Many schools do require those and samples of work though.
