9th grade placement help

Post by renee » Fri Dec 23, 2016 11:29 am

Hello. My son has dabbled in HOD off and on during his elementary years. He has been attending Classical Conversations Challenge program for the past two years (7th and 8th gr.). I am looking into HOD high school for 9th grade and have a few questions:

Where would I place him in grammar? This year for 8th we are doing Growing with Grammar 7. I it covers diagramming. He also receives diagramming instruction in his Henlie Latin course with Classical Conversations. He doesn't struggle with it.

For writing he is doing The Lost Tools Of Writing. They read books and write a persuassive paper using the method in The Lost Tools. Second semester they will be using Words Aptly Spoken short stories to learn literary terms and writing short stories.

I peeked at Essentials in Writing 9 and it had a lot of things we have not covered yet. For the past two years wwe have only worked on persuassive writing. Before that he did IEW. He is not a writer. Doesn't enjoy it. He just gets it done. Tends to rush (ADHD), but he is capable of writing a decent paper. Would it mess up the flow of the guide if I placed him in the 9th grade level in Essentials?

Any input would be appreciated!

Renee

Renee,

Based on what you shared about your son's previous grammar study, I would be inclined to place your son in Rod and Staff English 7, following the half-speed schedule for English 7 as written in the World Geography Guide. Based on what you shared about your son's writing, I would also lean toward placing your son in Essentials in Writing 10 as scheduled in the World Geography Guide. Essentials in Writing 9 and 10 are very similar, and we prefer the writing topics in 10 over those in 9. :D

Blessings,
Carrie
