Hi I am going to be using HOD for the 1st time and I have some math questions. Last year for grade 1 we used CLE math and my daughter hated it. I think she might do better with the mastery approach. I am considering Bob Jones math but I hate the teachers manual! I have read that some say Singapore math is good for the math advanced child. We didn't get through all of CLE math last year. Just over half of it. Is Singapore spiral or mastery? My Daughter tested in 1B should I start there? I am going to be doing LHFHG with my K and 2nd grader next year and am wondering if I should get the Beyond guide to help us do math if we chose to go that route. HELP it's all so confusing to me. I am doing Rod and Staff for English and that looks good for my 2nd grader I just can't seem to decide on which math program for her.
Thanks ladies for all the helpful ideas I have gotten in reading the many encouraging posts.

I don't know if what I have to add will help, but I'll try.
We used Singapore Math for 1st grade with my dd while using Beyond.... She did well with it, and the Math activities written into the Math box in Beyond...were fun, and simple. Because we had a left-over Math book for 2nd grade we used Horizons this past year, and again she did very well. However, we will be switching back to Singapore for 3rd, and hopefully the rest of our elementary years. I like the way that Carrie has written the activities into the manual to coordinate with the Math pages. I like the fact that the workbooks/textbooks are more economical than many others...which is a factor when buying for 3 children. I also like that we will be using all of the (Carrie) recommended resources for the manual. We will use Bigger... next year, and we will be using all of the recommended resources....it's a great feeling that I won't have to try to tweak it or find other resources that will compliment it...yet I can add to it if I want to. (Like a foreign language, or Health/P.E., which are both required ever year in our state.) It is a complete program all by itself!
Anyway, those are my thoughts. I hope it helps to hear my opinion. I'm sure others will offer theirs too.

We started out with the second half of Beyond and I bought both 1A/B. She tested 1B but not real well. She enjoyed the math activities and still does in Bigger(activies end in Bigger). I think I read that Singapore is Mastery. I started with Lifepacs to Horizons and it was rough. Now math is fun. It's nice not having all those extra problems that were in Horizons which is a spiral approach.

africamom,
I think your plan for Singapore sounds like a good one. I would do as you suggested to make sure she has her basics down in 1A/1B. I think you'll want the Beyond guide for the math activities, the spelling lists, the gentle grammar lessons, and the Emerging Reader Set schedule in the Appendix of Beyond for your daughter to do along with LHFHG, since she's 7 turning 8. That will help get the language arts and math where it needs to be for her level.
Then, you'll be set.
Blessings,
Carrie
