staying on one subject for too long

We are new to HOD this year. WE are doing beyond for my sons 2nd grade year. We have loved it so far, and I can say we have done more reading in this program than in any other year and he loves it! (The reading out loud that is) If I could get him to love to read then I would be a happy mama!

The only complaint we have is that the history portion has stayed on one subject for so long that we are getting bored with it. We are on week 21 and we are just now beginning to read about someone other than the Pilgrims! WE are just tired of the Pilgrims. I just wondered if the other guides as you go up move a little more quickly through the subjects or is it the same?

Bigger definitely moves faster. Basically every week had been a different topic in history, although I think we are about to a "slower " period with the Wright Brothers for a few units. But we are have completed 27 units already!
I think Beyond covers the shortest time span, which leads to the possibility of Pilgrim overload.

We didn't do Beyond,but I know the others move fairly quickly through different time periods. We are currently doing Bigger right now and it's been awesome! Learning about a new historical figure almost every week! Some of them I would've liked to have lingered on a bit longer, but I just stuck with the program as is. The John Audubon book for science was wonderful! And that one we read for a few weeks. I do remember Beyond being all about the Pilgrims, but I think the idea is to really get the children acquainted with the life of the Pilgrim's and to develop a heart connection with the time period, getting them used to the Charlotte Mason method without overwhelming them with too much information. Maybe? Bigger is a great program! Some of the history readings are a bit dry at times, BUT they have taught my son to truly listen when I read, and they are short readings. I have been amazed at the information that he is narrating back now at week 22 from where he was at at the beginning of Bigger. Hope that helps!
