curriculum advice please. ..

Post by Kkubicek2 » Tue Sep 22, 2015 8:45 pm

I have an 8 year old 3rd grade boy who is doing World History with "A Child's History of the World" and an assortment of books we have previously used with older siblings. I am also doing Bible, memory verses, reading aloud, a reading program, reviewing phonics and a light language arts program as well as science and math (and music and art). My son LOVES drama and hands on projects. Also, he is a dancer so is very expressive :) .
I would like to switch to "Preparing Hearts..." but when I review the placement information, he seems to match Bigger Hearts in the areas of writing and grammar. He is reading somewhat independently. I don't want to switch back to American History so I am thinking of passing over "Bigger Hearts" because American History is all we have done so far, except for Biblical history. I would like to do World History this year. Would "Preparing Hearts" be too hard for him?

Thank you !

Curriculum placement is key to successful completion. My daughter is in Preparing now. She is accurately placed. Skills that are needed to make this guide successful are fine motor strength to draw pictures from the Drawing Through History and the science books. Being able to copy Bible verses, paragraph from science, 3 sentence written narration, answer 5 science questions, complete 5 vocabulary words (pictures, definition, and sentence). The reading skills are needed to read directions in 2 boxes, read science independently, DITHOR, and read independent history.
That is a lot of work for an 8 yo to do and some can. When my son was that age he did Preparing. I helped him more than I should have so we had to take a break. If I could do it over I would have just gone slower. My son still struggles with writing. But I think he would have enjoyed more free time and less structure. So sure it could be done, but it might not be the best placement. Take it slow when needed and enjoy the time. Each year gets progressively more independent and requires more reading. If you do begin Preparing know I am also doing that guide.

Here are two threads that Carrie posted on that might be helpful for you to read:

Here is a thread specifically on the reasons to not just place one's children in HOD where they would fit next in the history cycle. It is a great post by Carrie:

Placement is very key to success in HOD. I would encourage you to pay most attention to his skills, and less in the history that he will get over time.

I agree about placement - if your son matches up with Bigger hearts, then I would go with Bigger. You may not be interested in doing American history as much again but you will noticed that even with HOD, they do a lot of American history in the beginning as well. It is a great foundation and many times it is written as to not scare kids vs some other eras that do have more difficult or even upsetting events. With those other eras, you could always leave out some of the more traumatic events but then it would really skew the child's view of that era. That is why HOD does American History for the first few years.

One other thing to consider is that only one component of Bigger is history. The science is absolutely fantastic! It is very interesting and engaging. Plus, Bigger is going to help your child get ramped up for the writing requirements of Preparing. Preparing is actually fairly challenging in regards to writing volume and reading. In Preparing, kids are expected to read all of the science to themselves and then will be reading quite a bit for the independent history to themselves as well. Since your child isn't reading much independently, I would wait on completing Preparing for one more year. Some of the things that make Preparing so wonderful is the fact that child is working alone and doing these things independently. In addition, in CTC (the level after Preparing), the child is then reading all of the science and all of the history to themselves. These books are a higher level than the ones they read in Preparing. So if your child is struggling through Preparing, they will definitely be struggling through CTC as well.

I do think even though you have studied American History, you honestly will love Bigger as well. It is very biographical. It has a lot of map work included. It combines science with the time period in many ways. My kids LOVED it. And they also studied American History quite a bit prior to using HOD (I have been using HOD for 2 full years now and we are always blown away by our wonderful years). For me - HOD makes it easy to get my kids day done and include a ton of fun along the way. I am sure that even though you have studied American History, this will be different as every program is always a bit different. And the writing activities included will really help get your child prepared for the writing in Preparing.

Finally as one person mentioned - using the placement chart to help you place your child is the best way to select a level. The levels have age ranges because all kids are different and not all kids at 8 can do the same thing. My son did Bigger at 8 and my youngest is doing it at 7. For my son, he is 9 and in Preparing now and I am glad that we waited. At times I even feel like it may have served me better to have had him do Preparing at 10 rather than 9. He is doing well and all but he does still sometimes struggle with reading. We are taking it at his pace. On days when we need to slow down, we slow down. Some days he zooms through with no problem. The great thing with HOD is that they give you one days worth of plans at a time and you can then work through it as quickly or as slowly as you want. It truly is open and go and it truly is easy to set your pace. Bigger really is a wonderful level and I think you and your kids will really enjoy it too.

I agree with the others. My son is 9, in 3rd grade and places perfectly in Bigger. Thus far he loves it. He is also a dancer (he takes ballet and Jazz/tap). At this age it does not matter if they repeat something, if fact it may help him remember it better. :)

Thank you EVERYONE for your curriculum posts regarding my questions about placement. . wow! Great comments and many things I hadn't thought about - and I have been homeschooling 10+ years.

He definitely places better at "Bigger" - and when I started reviewing that program without focusing on the type of history, I began to see the fit. He is a very young 3rd grader and very much into "adventures" - so this should go well.

I, too, helped him along last year and realized right away this year that we need to slow down and gently "catch up" on the writing and reading skills:).

Thank you again for taking time out of your busy lives in responding to my question!
