Literature Portion of the Geography Guide

Post by collie » Thu Jul 09, 2015 8:07 am

I see the Geography guide uses BJU literature, but also adds several books for a full year. We will be using the Geog. guide for our LA portion this year (in conjunction with RevtoRev + extras). My understanding is that the BJU lit is considered a semester credit on its own, so I am curious..... Are the (real, full length) books added to make a full 1.0 credit in literature, or is the BJU not used in its entirety, or are the books added to improve/add rigor to the BJU. I guess I'm wondering if the books are necessary for credit. I will be awarding English credits as Eng 9, Eng 10, etc (English credits to include grammar, comp, and lit) if that matters. This is for a student who is average, no learning disabilities, but slow reader. We are planning for college, so I don't want to skimp on the lit portion (or any other portion), but at the same time, we don't need "honors" type levels for this particular dd, just basic high school material. So, bottom line, my question: Is adding the books to the BJU lit mandatory for the lit portion of the English credit?

This might help if you haven't seen it yet viewtopic.php?f=6&t=13147. The BJU lit is considered a semester by BJU, but my assumption has always been that is because it would be accompanied by classroom lecture so they would spend the entire semester doing an hour a day of lit and then the second semester would be the Grammar/Writing book for the other half of a credit. The way Carrie uses BJU you have some discussion with the student or they answer the questions, but nothing to the extent of what it would be in a classroom situation. I hope that makes sense. The full length novels really add to the lit study and my ds enjoyed those actually more than the BJU lit, but he is a kid that is not very fond of reading excerpts or short stories. He likes time to get to know the characters :D . That being said my son is also just an average student who reads slow and can get overwhelmed with too much reading, so for him I did cut out 3 of the novels and spread the remaining ones out. This isn't something HOD recommends for a typical student, but my ds has very mild CP so this was an adjustment I made for him. I looked at how much time a day he was spending on English and this made it fall within the guidelines for a full credit when you included the Grammar and Writing program. Instead of cutting out the lit all together you might consider something like that.
