Hi there everyone! I'm new to HOD. We just got our books recently. I am reading through the intro to prepare myself. I have 1 in Preparing and I see mention of a Commonplace book. I'm just wondering if the idea is to use 1 for every subject in this level, or a separate one for each subject it is listed for? I've never used one before. So I want to get my mind around the idea! Thanks!
Rachel
Silly question, maybe?

You would only use one common book. It is a special place to note things of importance. When we went to Mount Vernon a few years ago, it was so neat for my kids to see Washington's writing desk and his "common place" book. He kept journals filled with things he thought worthy of writing down. You may want to consider getting a really nice bound book that your child continues to use through the years. I wish I had done that for my first child, rather than getting a new one each year. Hope that helps, and welcome to HOD. You are going to love it!

As previously mentioned, the Common Place book is a special notebook for recording things of interest/value that the child will want to remember. What they write in it is dictated in the guide but they could certainly also use it for other things they read that they want to remember.
I got a nice bound book for my daughter when she was in Preparing and she is using it still for CTC for the "Common Place book" assignments. All other work where it says you can either use a bound notebook or paper, we use paper and put it in a notebook, sometimes with page protectors just so they last a little longer. I used bound notebooks in Bigger and didn't like it - some assignments call for lined paper and some for unlined, and sometimes you want to use the Science Lab sheet. It's just much easier if you can pick out the kind of paper needed for the specific assignment and then put them all in the notebook (with dividers for History, Science, English, etc).
