Why so much chemistry?

Post by sltress » Tue Jun 02, 2015 10:37 pm

I see chemistry is scheduled for MtMM and then in the WG guide there is Integrated Physics and Chemistry and then in the upcoming new guide there is chemistry again. I realize that the one in MtMM is introductory and the one in the new guide is advanced but is there really a need for all of that chemistry? If we wait and just do the Mr Q's, etc. chemistry in the new guide, will my child be totally lost? I realize physics is included in the WG guide and Carrie's reasons for that, which is fine. And I realize that there is Evolution study in the MtMM guide and that is good. I am strictly asking about the chemistry components. Thx!

I believe ICP is what most colleges are looking for now for a 9th grade credit. And it makes sense. It allows you to get a basic understanding before moving on to more difficult topics. Where I live, grades 9 and 10 are fully integrated sciences between all 4, giving them a good basic under standing of all the sciences. Then in 11 and 12, you choose your specialties to dig in deeper.

So it sounds like if we chose not to do the chemistry part in MtMM we would be OK. I was just wondering the "method behind the madness" of all the chemistry. :)

Most middle school science curriculums include some chemistry, often in general and physical science. Carrie chose to wait until MtMM because that is where chemistry was really "discovered" in the timeline. You will notice that Carrie includes biographical books as well as traditional books for the chemistry portion.
As for repeating of information, I would treat it like a spiral approach to math or grammar. Repetition is often helpful for students to get a firm grasp of the concepts. If you had a real science-y kid, I would personally skip the IPC and do biology in 9th grade, chemistry in 10th, physics in 11th, and then an advanced science in 12th. But, for the average to above average student, doing all of the science as written will be very helpful!

MTMM's science was a big help in preparing our ds for IPC in high school. I'd do it! :D
