Roman numerals in Singapore Math

Post by ednerisa » Fri Apr 17, 2015 5:48 am

Hi everyone,

One or two years ago when I was watching the Amazing Race on TV, there was an episode where the contestants had to figure out what was the year written in Roman numerals. I found it sad that a lot of them didn't understand what it was.

I am hoping that my children will better appreciate architecture with/and Roman numerals engraved into them. :)

So, are Roman numerals taught in Singapore Math? If it is, which grade/level? If not, what did you use to teach Roman numerals?

Thanks!
Christine

I don't think they are taught in SM.

My kids have started picking up on them through chapter numbers, so I realized it's time to mention them. I figure we'll have a day where I'll go over what each letter means and then write some numbers (like years) and have them figure it out. Of course I'm going to have to find something to remind me of what each of the higher numbers is, because we basically use I, V and X and not really the higher ones in daily life. But it is something useful to have been exposed to.

I use Saxon and Roman Numerals are in the Algebra 1/2 book. This is our first year, so I'm not sure if it's introduced earlier or not.

It is also covered in Story of the World, Vol. 1 (Chapter 35). I was thinking you could just grab that at the library, but it's in the Activity Guide.

I'm pretty sure math drills .com has drill sheets for Roman numerals. Saxon does teach Roman numerals in several levels as well.
