Well, we aren't there yet, but I am helping a friend whose daughter will be in the WG guide, 9th grade this fall. We have been looking at potential college requirements, and at least one strongly recommended an "Advanced Composition" course. Would the writing throughout the four high school guides equate to that in some way? If so, does the guide explain how she might reflect that on a transcript?
Since I am asking questions, how much of the 1 language art credit is the literature portion? Maybe an easier way to ask that is how much time is spent on the literature component? Our state requirements just list 4 Language art credits. When I go into the actual standards it makes my head spin, so I clicked out of that and am going to assume we are good, but curious about the literature component.

Re: Does HOD HS writing = "Advanced Composition" ?
I am hoping someone else replies to this because my kids are young as well and I don't know all the answers to your question.
I do know that I get an annual assessment done by a certified teacher for my kids to meet my state's requirement and she is thoroughly impressed with the structure, resources, schedule and set up of HOD. She has only wonderful things to say about this program. In addition, academically, I would think that most of these classes are somewhat advanced considering the volume and the resources scheduled. I would think that on your transcripts you would physically label that item "advanced composition" and I would think that if there were going to be such an item, it would probably included in one of the final 2 high school guides that are not yet written or published.
My hope though is that someone who is completing one of the guides will weigh in and give you their thoughts. I do know that longer my kids use HOD, the better their communicating and writing has become. So I would anticipate that by the end their program, my kids composition will be "advanced" even if I don't label formally LOL.

Re: Does HOD HS writing = "Advanced Composition" ?
countrymom,
This is a good question! The first thing to find out is what the particular college considers "Advanced Composition." What is their definition of Advanced Composition?
The combination of Rod and Staff English (and all the writing, grammar, usage, etc. contained within that program) combined with another formal writing program for each year of high school (with its variety and level of assignments) leads me to consider much of the writing completed within our programs to be Advanced Composition. Of course, depending on what we include within each upcoming guide, some of the years of composition within HOD will be more advanced than others. My inclination would be to call the World History Guide's composition Advanced Composition simply due to the make up of all of the composition components within that particular guide. Kiddos write daily for their literature journal in reflective type prompts, cover the 4 essay types in Essentials in Writing (as well as writing a college-prep essay, a literary response paper, and a research paper) and then cover other aspects of writing through Rod and Staff English.
Students also write across the curriculum in a variety of other assignments that raise the overall level beyond standard composition courses.
Just to provide a bit of comparison, here is a course description for a "typical" public high school's Advanced Composition Course:
Advanced Composition is a course designed to prepare students for the rigor of college level writing. Students will write in a variety of modes including informative, argumentative, narrative, and descriptive. In addition, students will practice effectual organizational, grammatical, and stylistic skills in order to improve the content and sophistication of their writing. Emphasis is placed upon multiple drafts, self reflection, and deep revision. Assignments will include but not be limited to the following: college entrance essays, argumentative essays, and narrative essays using dialogue. Students will also conduct a study with literary analysis of a classic novel in order to analyze the author's writing style and literary techniques.
As you can see by comparison, the HOD guides fare very well in this area!
Blessings,
Carrie
