New to HOD

Post by bcrawford40 » Wed Feb 18, 2015 2:30 am

Hi, My name is Brenda. I have decided to take my 16 year old son out of public school so that I have more control over the things that he is learning. I would like for him to have a christian learning environment and a friend of mine suggested this program. I do not know how to get started and would like any advice. He is a quick learner and is above average in his state scores.

Welcome! You have come to a great place for your son's education. HOD is not just teaching Bible, but applies it so practically and personally to each individual, as well as throughout every subject being taught. I would not be here otherwise. :)

We are not into the high school guides yet, but if you first look at the placement chart, you can get a good idea in which guide your son places. If you still aren't sure, come back here and ask questions. Those with experience in the high school guides will be able to help. You won't be disappointed. :D

Hey Brenda, God bless you :D I am homeschooling 3 boys, and this is our first year of highschool. We had my son visit schools here, had him spend a day in a class at the school we chose, and after all, he said, "I will go if you want me to, but I really want to stay home." He had more to say of course, but all he saw at school was kids goofing off, wasting time and being disrespectful. He observed that he could get more accomplished at home. It has been hard labor for him, but I am so impressed with the quality of his work and how interesting and full the curriculum is. I am sure you will find a good direction here, and do get together with Carrie and Mike to gain the best plan for your situation. It will be helpful to know what your state requires for highschool, as well as what your future plan is regarding college. As well, it will be helpful for you to lay out what credits he has already :) Have fun poking around the boards:-)

Hi Brenda, and welcome to the HOD Board! :D I have a 15 yo ds using HOD for his 10th grade year of high school right now, and I would not trade this time with him for anything. I feel like this is my last big chance to prepare him for adulthood! I want to help him become a strong Christian man that faces the world with as much confidence as possible. I also want to continue to instill in him the value of family - us as parents, and his siblings and cousins as friends. My best advice would be to remember this is a journey, and every moment won't go perfectly, yet that doesn't mean that the whole of the year can't be fantastic! The harvest is the year not the day - at least for us. Days are not perfect, but years are cherished. So, go into it knowing that you and your ds are embarking on a wonderful journey that you will look back on with joy! It takes time to decompress from ps and settle into the blessings of homeschooling, so give yourself and your ds some grace. You are making a good decision to be your ds's teacher and best advocate! My next best advice is consider placement carefully. It can make the best year possible go even better! It is worth time and consideration, as their are multiple paths through high school with HOD, but probably 1 path that is just tailor-made for your ds. Check out the placement chart, especially the first page of it, and if you get the chance, share your findings here with us! We'd love to help you place your ds properly and get you two off to a super start! :D I am looking forward to getting to know you here. This is a wonderful place to come for encouragement and help - the ladies here are truly amazing! :)
