Grades/Transcripts Oh My!

Post by mrsrandolph » Wed Nov 12, 2014 4:39 pm

I have a little time, but how do you "grade" Charlotte mason work? What specifically do you grade? How? And how do you learn to do a transcript? I don't even know if my child has to have a foreign language to get into college. This is stressful.

Have you looked at the introduction to the World Geography guide? Carrie has spelled out the credits for that guide as well as some instructions for grading. For anything that isn't objective, having a simple rubric is very helpful. For courses I teach, we often use a 4-5 points rubric. 0 is for no attempt, and then we have a few levels. I think some ladies have posted rubrics for WG on their blogs and linked to them here. For things like math and grammar, it is a lot easier because you can just do a percentage grade.

As Stephanie said the World Geography guide introduction is a good place to start to get an idea how to grade. Carrie has it all spelled out in the high school guides. As for foreign language almost all 4 year colleges want to see at least 2 credits of a foreign language, some want to see 3. I don't think that most community colleges require it, but I am not sure.

First, figure out what school your child wants to go to, then check the requirements. I've already spoke with the councillor at my DD's prospective school, just so I know not only prerequisites but what they require of homeschoolers. My DD requires grade 12 English, a portfolio of her work and we'll go for an interview. Other universities want prerequisites an essay and an interview. Others want prereques and an SAT. It varies greatly.

One thing I wanted to add though is that many people have modified RevtoRev and MTMM to meet high school requirements. There is a thread in here on how to do that. So you could use those guides (modified) for high school if you wanted too.
