New Here

Post by stepintothewater » Mon Oct 27, 2014 9:54 am

Hello, I have a 8th grader, will be 9th grader next fall, and I have a question regarding the high school program. My question is simply....where do I start? It looks like their are two history guides for the high school level, so how do I use this over a four-year span? BTW - we have never used HOD before, but am seriously considering it for next year. Thank you in advance.

Welcome to HOD! The World Geography guide is for 9th grade and the World History guide is for 10th grade. Carrie will produce the last two years, one per year in the next two years. So next fall the 11th grade guide will be available and so on. You can find the scope and sequence out line for the highschool guides here, http://www.heartofdakota.com/scope.php (scroll down to the bottom).

Welcome to the board and blessings as you consider HOD! I am not to high school level yet but I have really enjoyed my journey so far with HOD and feel it is a very easy-to-use, well written program that keeps Christ in the center and develops children well in all areas.

This is the placement chart for the high school guides. Two are written (well the second one is still being written) but the plan is to write one per year until there are 4 High School guides. Some high schoolers are not yet ready for these guides, especially coming in from a very different style of learning. Here is the placement chart for the other guides:

The last two Junior High guides can definitely be beefed up to be high school credit worthy. Many people are already doing this as the high school guides were not written yet. Definitely place your child where she fits and don't think that she should be doing the HS guides just because she is entering 9th grade. Your experience will be MUCH better this way.

Were you thinking of starting now, or soon? Or were you thinking of starting next fall? Depending on how well what you are using now is going, you may want to consider switching sooner rather than later. Placement may change between now and next fall also, so while you could consider it now, you would definitely want to re-evaluate before you purchase.

HOD has great customer service and will gladly discuss with you on the phone where you are at and what your needs are. Their help would help you go in the right direction.

I agree with looking at the placement chart. If you aren't coming from a Charlotte Mason/living book curriculum, the switch in style may require you to do Rev2Rev, MtMM, WG, and then WH for the 4 years of high school. There is a pinned discussion on how to beef up guides, and it is very easy to beef up Rev2Rev and MtMM to get the desired credits for high school. The big difference is that you would be starting with US history instead of geography and world history.
Mom to
DD16 (completed LHFHG-WH, parts of US1 and 2)
DS14 WG (completed LHFHG-MtMM plus some of LHTH)
DD13 MtMM (completed Rev2Rev)
DS8 Bigger (completed LHTH-Beyond)

Thank you so much for the information! I will definitely look into the placement test before placing her. Thanks again :D
