DITHOR vs Rev2Rev Storytime for High School Literature?

Hi ladies!

My son will be using Rev2Rev for 9th grade next year. He has dyslexia and Literature is going to be a tough subject to get through. I will be reading a lot to him out loud (DITHOR, Storytime books, History readings) and I'm afraid it will be a bit much for me and my voice. I don't know if this is even possible, but could the storytime books double as literature credit If I used the DITHOR 7/8 workbook with them? I guess I'm just trying to cut down on the amount of reading and still get the whole curriculum in.

If I skip the storytime books and do DITHOR for literature, will it take away from his history credit? I will not be purchasing the extension packs because It will take him quite a while to do the history as written. This is my first time to homeschool high school so credits are new to me!

Carrie doesn't recommend using the storytime as Literature, but you are in a very unique situation with your son. If you think the time it will take him to do the history without the storytime will be enough hours for a credit(120-140 hours) then I think you could use some of the storytime books as your DITHOR books. You only need 4-5 genres for the year so it could look like this: Biography-Sir Walter Raleigh, Mystery-The Mystery of the Silver Coins, Historical Fiction-The Tinkers Daughter(a great book), Adventure: Forbidden Gates and Realistic Fiction-Ink on His Fingers. You could also you Squanto for one of the genres if you wanted since it is already an audio, or just have him listen to that when it is scheduled in the guide to add to the history hours.

Thank you Lynn for your advice! I was trying to find those books because I didn't recognize the titles, and I think they may be for a different level. If I were to take the Storytime books from Rev to Rev and plug them in to the DITHOR genres and use them for Lit, could I count the hours towards history as well? or is that pushing it?

In your opinion, would I do better to just take DITHOR as written and pick some good books from the list, and drop the story time books? I don't want to drop any parts of the curriculum because it all looks so good, but it just may be too much. Then again, he might surprise me and do well with it all!

I will be in your situation in a couple of years too. How severe is your ds's dyslexia? Would it be possible to find lower-level books that he could read independently or audio books that he could use for DITHOR? That way, you would only be reading the history books to him. That is what I will be doing this coming year for my 13 yo ds who will be using Rev.to Rev. The challenge is to find books on his reading level that are all interesting to him!

Oh boy I am sorry I read rev to rev as RTR. You could maybe split the storytime books and use half for DITHOR and the remaining ones for history if you need more hours. They are all great books. It would be easy to get the Biography with Florence Nightingale or George Washington Carver, adventure Pirate Patriot or Gabriel's Horses, historical fiction any of them and realistic fiction Seaman or Maria's home. The Rev and the Redcoats might work as mystery. I don't think you want to just drop all the storytime books as they really do bring things to life.

Laura, His dyslexia is moderate, I would say. He does well with small chunks in a larger font IF his attention is there that day. I do plan to have him read some on his own. Last school year he went through educational therapy and got a lot of help. He is able to recognize when he is becoming disoriented and is learning to highlight and use sticky notes to keep himself on track. He has a short term memory and processing issue as well, but his attitude is very good most of the time. He's pretty determined! That being said he gets headaches with it all and tends to "hit a wall" if the assignment is too long. At that point nothing is getting in.

I had thought about getting lower level books for DITHOR. Can I do that when going for High School credit? Would I be able to use the 7/8 student book with lower level books?

How about finding the books Carrie suggests for high school level DITHOR as audio books? Many are classics, SDI it should be fairly easy to fund them. Our public library actual had a lot of online audio books wet can check out. Maybe find an audio book that would be a 10 day book that is high school level and pair it with a book he read at a lower level?

Thank you Stephanie! Audio books tend to be hard for him to stay with. But if it is read at a slower pace, it may work depending on his interest in the book. Our library has a ton of audio books so maybe I can find something there!

Has anyone tried movies for Literature? OH if it was only that easy!!!
