I think the recommendation is to do 2/3 of the lesson orally then about 1/3 written. First I do the oral review from the teachers guide with my dc. Then we read the lesson together and do the oral questions. We usually do a good part of the written questions orally as well. I usually only save one small part to write, for instance 5-7 sentences to diagram, or something like that. In the early books that means a lesson is less than 15 minutes. As we have gotten into the older guides, it takes a little longer, but it still doesn't take that long.
