Help with 9 yr old and Bigger/preparing placement?

Post by Charika30 » Wed Jun 04, 2014 8:02 am

Hi ladies,

After looking at the placement chart I think my dd places in the Bigger guide. She is 9 turning 10 in December. She will be entering 4th grade. According to the chart that would mean she would need extensions? I think the amount of reading and extra time spent with extensions might be too much and k overwhelming for her. But my question is will doing this guide without extensions be sufficient for an almost 10 yr old 4th grader? Or too easy/not challenging enough? I could put her in Preparing without extensions but she hasn't had a whole lot of independent work experience. So I am not sure if she is ready for preparing. Any thoughts? Thanks so much in advance! :-)

If she places in Bigger, then you don't' use extensions. Extensions are for when they place in a guide or two higher and you chose to use a lower guide, normally when combining. Bigger is fine as is for a 4th grader with proper levels of math and grammar. The extensions are really for 5th and 6th graders using Bigger (or an advanced 4th grader combined with a younger sibling).

Wow, I didn't know that. Thank u for your reply! :) I always thought extensions were for the older kids in higher grades, but this is good to know. That even if they r older, if they place in a particular guide, they don't need extensions.

Extensions are not for a certain age or even placement but they are available for students who are more mature, who can generally handle the reading on their own, and who are ready to investigate the topics at a deeper level. I would say your daughter is borderline on "needing" extensions for Bigger and you would need to decide whether or not they would be too much. Age and maturity do factor into this, like if she would enjoy the extra work then it might be something to consider. If this is her first year doing HOD I would start without them and then add them in if she seems willing and interested.

This is GREAT! Thank u! Can I just ask, would this still apply to a 12 yr old 6th/7th grader doing preparing? I noticed that some 8 yr old, 3rd graders are doing preparing... just want to make sure.....

I mean the part about not doing extensions unless they were interested and would enjoy the extra work?

Extensions aren't "necessary" at any level except once you get to High School, if you are not doing the HS guides you would want to add on to some of the other guides in order to make them worth HS credits for the transcript. Of course you want to make sure you are meeting your state's requirements for what your children do, but beyond that, place them where they really fit well.

Proper placement is key, and if you have that your child should be challenged but the work should be achievable for them. Many would look at the standard grade level where people use these guides and think that if their child wasn't in them they would be behind. While getting in all the HS credits may be a challenge, I think it's wonderful to let the child work at their own level, exactly what they need. Once you start, you will probably discover pretty quickly whether or not your child is challenged enough, or too much.

ETA: I should say that I have never used extensions. One thing I think they do for a child who is older than the age-range of the guide, is they explore the topics more in-depth, which that child is probably ready for. HOD does a great job of making things age-appropriate and just enough, because each level is meant to be used with certain ages, it's not created to try to reach all ages or even a very wide range. So because an older child should be ready for a longer school day, and because an older child can think more in-depth about the history and science they are learning, the extensions provide that. As someone else mentioned, they are most often used when combining with a younger sibling, meaning the child doesn't necessarily place in that guide but you are "beefing it up" for them so you can do parts of it together with a sibling. But I know some use it even when that is the only child placed in that guide, because they feel the child needs the extra challenge. All of HOD's book selections are wonderful that I have experienced so far and I would recommend using extensions if you think your child can handle it. It will really deepen their experience. If reading is a struggle maybe you could use audio books or read it to them if you have the time.
