Can you help me place my 11yo?

Post by 4froggies » Tue Apr 22, 2014 1:13 pm

We are returning to HOD and I have aleady figured out placemat for my other kids. My question is about my 11yo dd who will be in 6th grade. Looking at the placement chart, she fits in CTC. However, we did ancients this year, so I would prefer not to do it again. Should I put her in Preparing with extensions, RtR, or just do CTC? Thanks!!

Did you do the science also from CTC? I think if she places solidly in CTC, I personally would repeat it but that is just me. And I am not sure what you covered with ancients but it may be a little bit different flavor with CTC???? Not sure though.

Does she place into RTR in any of the areas? If so which ones?

Thanks for your replies.

She places in RtR for Reading and Grammar. She is not there in writing yet, though. She really does fit in CTC. Preparing would be enjoyable and fairly easy for her (which is appealing to me with a baby due in the fall), but I want to make sure she grows next year, especially in her writing. Hmmmmm...

Would she be able to do the extensions with Preparing? Overall, that would push her to more of an RtR level, but mostly it is reading. There are some written narrations, etc included though with the extensions, that could be a decent option. Then you could revisit the placement chart near the end of the year and see if she could then skip CtC.

Oh, I didn't realize the extensions had some written narrations included. That would give her what she needs I think. Thanks!!!

Well, I decided to do CTC with her after all. I decided that the skills she will be learning in CTC are more important than where we are in history. Plus, she will be learning much more biblical history with CTC than we did this year. Thanks for your help. This board is great!

It seems like you have made your decision but what I was going to say was if you did Preparing next year, then you would be lined up to do CTC the following year, repeating your study of ancient history. It seems best to place her where she fits best, which will be the easiest on you as the teacher also, it really does go so smoothly when they are well placed, once you get through the first 3-4 weeks of getting used to it.
