spelling Word fun- Beyond

Post by raindrops » Sat Apr 19, 2014 1:18 pm

We have been working on spelling list #1 and I have been working in these ideas for a little fun:

On Day 5 we play tic-tac-toe with the 2 "target words" marked with an *.
He'll happily write and re-write his word in order to play this game..!

On days 1 and 4, we will either do lift the flap or "memory". For memory, I write all the spelling words on individual cards and then he studies them (one by one) and writes them on his own cards. Once we have 2 of each word, we flip them all over and play memory with them.
Then I can reuse the cards to make "lift the flap" for day 4. Flip card to see word, flip "shut" and write from memory... the picture below "explains" it better.

For day 2, the "test" day, I write the words on a long slip of paper and weave I it into a sheet of sturdy cardstock. He can't see what I wrote, but I tell him the word to write and then he pulls the tab out to reveal the correct spelling.

Aaaaand sometimes we play "switcher-roo" which I have written about before. Choose 3 words, show the child the written word then flip them over and move them around ball-and-cup style. The child must track them and then write the word where he thinks it goes on the backs of the cards. He loves this! Then turn the cards over and see if he got them right!

And just for fun, I made up some bingo cards using the spelling list. I haven't tried actually playing this with him yet and it doesn't have him actually spelling the words. I guess in the future I could have him write the words onto a card... but let him use MY card so he can see the word written... uumm... *neatly*.

Can my children do school with you? You sound like such a fun teacher--I'm pretty boring. :)

Aww! It really doesn't take much time to do the spelling games. You're writing the words out on individual cards anyhow, I just tape them to the paper for the lift-the-flap, nothing special! It is nice because then you have your word-list taped down for keeps. I was just throwing them away before. This is good for keeping a record- or proof at least of what they've done.

He despised writing his spelling words before I made a game out of it. It is fun for me too.

The pull tab idea came when we made the woven paper rug for the history activity. We had some slips of colorful paper left and I thought... oh, I KNOW what to do with these! I reuse the same sheet of black card stock and you can use both sides of the slips of paper so it is as easy and quick as just jotting down the word on the slip.

We do tic-tac-toe on a white board and I write the *Target Words at the top and let him choose which one he wants since there are always two. He ends up writing the word maybe 10 times without complaint... usually I am the one who says, "ooookay, let's move on to the next subject"

Those are some great ideas! Good for you for doing it and making it fun for him. I may steal some of them.
