Singapore math pictures

Post by djemommy » Thu Mar 20, 2014 2:14 pm

New to homeschooling here and I was wondering if anyone had any pictures of Singapore math. And I would love to hear how much teaching / prep there is for it. I have heard more about math u see but want to try to understand Singapore so I can make a choice what would work best for me and my 3 homeachooled kiddos.
I will have two boys turning 8&10 shortly after school start and a girl who will be 5 1-2yrs at the start or school. They all have been in public school up until now but have felt the call for homeschooling them.
Thanks!

If you go to: http://www.singaporemath.com/Primary_Ma ... d_s/39.htm , you can see samples of all the books. Just select the book you'd like to look at and then click the "Contents_Samples" tab. Scroll down and you'll see both the table of contents as well as a few samples of that book.

I hope it works for you! We love Singapore here!

Most days with math (I use Singapore from the beginning) it takes 5 minutes or less of teaching time. Occasionally my oldest will have a hard time picking up a concept and then when we review it we basically have to teach it again. But still not too much.... Probably nothing different than I'd have to do with any other curriculum, you know?

So far my oldest two have scored grade level or above in math on our end of year testing. Early on their "fluency" (speed basically) is right at grade level, but their concepts are above. I don't do anything other than what is written in the guides.... no drills or memorization.

I have used Singapore from the start and the strengths are that it teaches "Conceptual Math" rather than just how to solve problems a certain way, focussing on understanding concepts. Math U See is similar in that way. Singapore does a lot of word problems and is strong in reasoning and problem-solving skills. I find it easy to use but I have been using it from the start, and I also am a "mathy" person and was taught conceptual math by my dad. The hands-on activities written in the HOD guides are very easy to do and really help with understanding. These will go along with Singapore workbooks, if you do MUS you will just pace it on your own and do it every day. Using what is in the guide will make your day(s) faster most likely because everything is balanced so that when you have an involved math activity or long lesson, everything else is shorter that day.

Singapore has a placement test on their website you will want to use, since the school may have had a very different style of teaching, and Singapore is typically one grade level ahead, meaning 1A/1B is 2nd grade level, etc.
