IEW Medieval History Based Writing Placement

Post by mothermayi? » Tue Mar 18, 2014 8:10 pm

I am filling my cart in the HOD store and I am stumped for composition in RTR. DS12 began Essentials in Writing Level 5 at the beginning of the school year. He is finishing it now and is doing very well. I decided to go with level 5 rather than level 6 because this was our first year really doing a formal writing program. I didn't want to overwhelm him. He really took off with EIW and has published some really nice pieces. My question with him is should I have him use EIW 6 for the rest of the school year to get him "caught up" since he is in 6th grade? Or is it okay to jump right into IEW Medieval History-Based Writing in RTR? We aren't scheduled to begin RTR until late October since we began CTC Oct. 28, 2013. So he could finish EIW 6 by then. However, if he will be okay to begin IEW without completing EIW 6 that would be nice since it would save a few pennies :-). TIA

I would just have him start IEW at the same time when you do RTR. It is written into the plan. Plus, the writing is very varied with HOD. So they use all different kinds of resources to teach the kids write anyway. So I probably wouldn't finish EIW. that is just me.

Agreeing with Daneale! ;)

We've done the RTR guide with our boys and used the IEW Medieval Writing course right along with the guide where it's scheduled. It worked beautifully with what we were studying and was a time of much growth for them in the writing department. If you want to simplify....I'd just do the IEW course as written within your RTR guide when you get to it. :D

Thanks Ladies!

Your feedback was helpful. I think I will hold off on EIW 6 and just use some of WWTB that we already own since it is scheduled in our current CTC guide. This way he is still doing composition but I'm not spending any more money than that I have to. Then, we will move right into IEW Medieval History Based Writing when we begin RTR.

Thanks again!
