Help with placement

Post by cdrx4 » Wed Mar 05, 2014 3:50 pm

My 10 year old daughter is currently in the 4th grade in public school. I am taking her out next year to homeschool. Here is where my problem lies, she is not a good reader (probably on a 2nd maybe early 3rd grade level) and also is not a good speller. In placement I am confused on where to begin her, do I look at age, grade, how well she can write, where she is in history, how well she can read? I just want to place her in a book that is not overwhelming but pushing her at the same time.
If anyone could offer words of wisdom, a turn in the right direction, I would so appreciate. Thanks for your time ladies and gents.....

Have you checked out the placement chart? You can modify some things, but it is the best place to start to find the best placement. I would look at Preparing and Bigger mostly. Here is the link to the placement chart:

My daughter is 10 and in 4th grade. We just started Preparing, and it probably will take most of 5th grade to finish it. She has dyslexia, so her reading is below grade level. She is actually still in emerging reader books. Those are listed in the Bigger guide. My dd is also VERY weak in spelling. I needed to make some adjustments in that area. Preparing begins guiding the child toward independence, but I am currently reading the independent work to her. She is not ready to be on her own in that way. In your case, it sounds like either Bigger or Preparing would work. As already stated, use the placement chart and see how your dd places in both. If you still aren't sure, share the results and I'm sure someone can help you. :)
