Problem answering questions on Ice Age book-Preparing

Post by psreit » Thu Jan 30, 2014 12:41 pm

This was our first day reading "Life in the Great Ice Age". Angie couldn't wait for me to start reading it. :D She was fascinated just from looking at the pictures. We read the pages listed for the first day. It began with the preface, which would give a background of the story. I could tell it did not interest her too much. Then we read the first few pages of the story, which was fine. She even commented in a disappointed way that we wouldn't be reading further than page 9. When I asked her the questions from the guide, she couldn't answer them at all. :? Most of the questions were to be answered by what was in the preface. So, I feel like she didn't even 'get' what was read in the preface. I know she will enjoy the story, but how do you get your child to think about the facts? Part of me wanted to read the preface again, so she could answer the questions  , but I know that would not prove to be helpful. It would be very frustrating. And I know that is not the CM way. Basically what I did was answer the questions for her and explained again what was in the preface. Any suggestions?

First don't get discouraged, the preface just may not have held her attention like the story will. My ds is the type of kid that he has to make a connection to the story before he can answer questions or narrate it. When he was in Preparing he did much better when we were further in to a book than he did in the beginning. He is just a relational type of boy and needs to feel connected to the characters to really understand the story fully. Maybe Angie is similar. My other thought is that because she has struggled with some school type things she may be afraid of giving a wrong answer. My ds does that at times. I would keep telling her that it is ok to guess. If she gives you any answer then praise her and if isn't the one you think answers the question then say something like "that is a good thought, I was thinking of this." or "lets see what else in the book might help answer it also."

Thanks Lynn. We did discuss the answers to the questions, even though I had to give them to her. She was able to answer the one that went to the actual story. I think you are right about her being relational. She also learns so much from pictures. The few small pictures on the preface pages did not show her what I was reading. She really studies the pictures. She does listen to stories without pictures. I have been reading the Little House books to her with few pictures. I think she can relate to the characters from watching the videos. :) She has listened to other books without pictures, but they really help. But, I know as she gets older there will be more reading without pictures. Is this where CM's habit training comes into play? I'm not too familiar with her methods in this area. Maybe it would be helpful. :?:

My daughter struggles sometimes too. Sometimes I do go back to the text, I think she is assimilating it even if I did have to point her back to it. Sometimes I just tell her, or start off with part of the answer and see if she can then come up with the rest. I think it is really good to emphasize that it's not "right" or "wrong," you are just discussing what you thought. Even though there are better answers, anything that shows she is thinking about the story and understanding it you should praise her for!

Another thing I just thought of is when we first started Preparing Noah was not good at narrating or answering questions to things I read aloud, especially if there were few pictures. He also used the pictures to help him understand. I would have said he was a visual learner and I wasn't sure how the read alouds were going to go as we got further into the guides. By the time he got to CTC that had reversed. He was much better at narrating what I read to him and could remember the entire story if I did the reading and he struggled more when he did the reading. We still do the storytime in MTMM as a read aloud for this reason. He has gotten much better at listening and forming a picture in his mind. In the early years we did talk about that a lot that he needed to form a movie in his mind while I read so he could play it back to help him remember.

Thanks for the tips. I don't expect her to narrate perfectly, and I do praise her for a lot. I just get concerned when it seems like she didn't hear anything I read. Attention (or lack of it) has always been an issue when it comes to certain parts of doing school work. I am thankful for the progress she has made, so we just keep pressing forward. Lynn, thanks for giving me hope that the listening will get better in time. I will start using the movie idea. I had heard that before but never really talked to her about it. Maybe it will help. :)
