HOD Science

Don't you love it when your child tells you they don't like a certain subject, then it becomes their favorite? That's what happened this year in RestoRef science. My dd dreaded the astronomy book in the beginning and now she loves it. Last night she told me she would write a bunch of papers on the planets is she knew more.

(Excuse me, now that's a shocker...volunteering to write about science!)

Does anybody know if HOD science will cover astronomy any further in the high school guides?

I'd like to get my dd some Christian science books on the subject. I would be extremely grateful if anybody could recommend any Christian books or publishers on the subject.

I don't know if this is what you're looking for, but a really interesting book is "Glory of the Stars", by Raymond Capts... it is about how God wrote "His story" in the stars, the first Bible. And I think there are a few more books written along those lines by various authors but I haven't read them (yet). Glory of the Stars also comes in a dvd version.

It sounds interesting. I went on Amazon but couldn't locate the book. I'll have to search elsewhere.

Did you use Preparing? Finding the Constellations is used for science in that program. We spent a long time on Astronomy that year. For a middle school child, you could probably hand her the book and let her enjoy it. Also, there is an iPhone app that my children LOVE to use on a clear night called SkyGuide that identifies and guides them to constellations.

Yes, she did Preparing and we all enjoyed Finding the Constellations. My dh has the constellation app on his phone and that was my absolute favorite! Thanks for mentioning that because it could be of interest to others.

I think it's the planets, though, that really intrigue her. I think I read somewhere John Hudson Tiner has a book on astronomy and I was thinking about getting that for her. I just hope it isn't planned in a future HOD manuel.

I think the plan for the high school guides is Physical Science(which is in the World Geography guide), Biology, Chemistry and then an advanced science such as Physics, which you could probably choose to do a high school level Earth Science that would include Astronomy. I think you are safe using the Tiner Astronomy book now since that is considered more middle school level.

Thanks for the info, Lynn. Since the Tiner booker is geared toward middle school, then it should be an appropriate reading level for her.

I am so glad she is enjoying her science and wants to learn more.
