A thought for those with children in older guides

The life of a homeschool mom is FULL, so full that one might not have time to do much more than give your older child his or her guide and books and send them on their way. But I want to give you a nudge to take some time to enjoy the guide and the readings as you have time. I spend so much time with my younger children on their work that I don't ponder the older guides a great deal, but they are soooo rich. Just tonight I was reading a few chapters from one of the spines for Rev to Rev and the poetry and extension readings that go along with it. It was so wonderful! I was truly blessed. I usually read the extensions on my own, but I don't often read the spines and independent history assignments. The layering of themes and content is truly well done. One day...soon I hope...I'm going to start my own set of notebook pages.

I so agree with you! My 12 yo ds is severely dyslexic, so I have to go through all of the material with him. While it takes so much time every day, I'm secretly glad that I "get" to do all his school along with him.

I just read "Lantern in Her Hand" - just for fun, and I can honestly say that it is in my top 5 all time favorite books that have made the biggest impact on my life! "Stepping Heavenward" is another one, and HOD uses that as well. Doing my own notebook pages - now that sounds like fun someday!!! Yes, I agree - the books are truly amazing. Even the spines, as you said, they capture my attention and make me long for more time just read them myself. Someday... Thanks for sharing this thought here - it is a good one!

I try to read everything my children read for HOD. It is just too good to miss. I am just the opposite as Deltagal. I have to make sure I make time for the little ones everyday because I am naturally drawn to what my older ones are learning. It is such a balance with children all over the place! We are having a good year though (even though it is not my favorite time period). I am thankful for a program that makes even not-the-favorites fun!

I was just thinking today how wonderful the books are that Carrie picks out. I always order early for next year so I can spend the summer reading all the spines that he will be reading. I have learned so much and always enjoy the reading. My ds still wants me to do story time as a read aloud so that is what we do. We will finish one and think oh that was my favorite and then start the next one and say oh wait maybe this one is my favorite.
