Sign Above the Door...confusing??

Post by Yaya68 » Mon Sep 30, 2013 11:36 am

My DS commented this morning that the book Sign Above the Door (new World Geo guide) is confusing to him. He said the book is interesting, but the character introductions and explanations of who those characters are is confusing to him. Anyone else having similar experience? I don't want him to get discouraged in reading the book.

TIA,
Sonya

Hi, Sonya,

How far into the book has your son gotten? I agree that there are many characters that are introduced quickly (and have names unfamiliar to us which can be difficult) and it can be confusing at first, but it does become clear as the book goes on and it really is a great story, so I encourage him to stick with it. I asked my dd who finished it a few weeks ago, and she did not feel that it was confusing as the story went on. Have you read the book? I read it this summer and really enjoyed it. I felt it was very worthwhile in that it put me in the story of the plagues on Egypt and Israel's deliverance in a whole new light. I have never thought of it from the viewpoint of being an Egyptian during that time and it was really thought-provoking to me. It is also has lots of valuable information just on the time period and culture. I hope he sticks with it! (Maybe he could make a quick list of the characters' names and a short description to refer to at first).

Thanks Tiffini for your input. He is sticking with the book (doesn't really have a choice-lol), but I just wanted him to know that he is maybe on the right track with what he is feeling. By the sounds of it, perseverance will be a benefit in the end. No, I did not read the book since we were so undecided on which guide to place DS in and our order was placed after the Labor Day holiday. I think I will try to snatch the book while he is not reading it and try to peruse through it.

Thanks again!
