Emerging Reader Question

Post by glperky » Fri Sep 06, 2013 9:01 am

My 7 yo DS just started reading The Bigginer's Bible. He wants to read it during much of his free time! :D I am so excited and love to hear him read it. However, I am wondering if there is some reason he needs to follow the schedule or if it is o-Kay if he just keeps reading. Would it be better to stick to the schedule and get other books for him to read? If I should get him a different book to read in his free time, can you give me some suggestions for that reading level? Thank you so much for the help.

That's awesome that he is loving reading that so much! I know that must really bless your heart. :D It is important with the Emerging Readers that you do the follow-up comprehension questions. It's a precursor to narration and really helps build comprehension. So if you want to let him have the Beginner's Bible for free reading, I would use the other Bible choice to use with him for the Emerging readers. If you want to continue with the Beginner's Bible in the Emerging Readers then I would try to find some other books for him to read in his free time. You can check your library for beginning readers around a level 1. I know we enjoyed the Biscuit books and Sam books from the library. Zonderkidz also has an I Can Read series with lots of nice books. You could try any of those level 1 books too. They have lots of the individual Bible stories and other stories like the Owl and Otter series. We enjoyed many of those. As you progress along with the emerging readers you'll see extra books listed for each week that are around the same level as what you are currently reading. Those would be great to use for free reading when you get to that point. :D

I would keep him to the ER schedule. The reason is, if you race through the easy ones, you will hit the hard ones too quickly IMO. About halfway through the difficulty starts to go up pretty quickly. Other books he may like: The rest of the Frog and Toad that aren't in ER, Bobbsey Twins (next series after Dick and Jane), Mo Willems has some early readers that are really cute (Piggie and Elephant stories, Pigeon). There are also other titles listed with the ER selections that are really good, though more than 1/2 of them I had to do inter-library loan because our library didn't have them. Most of the ones I listed are in our local library so I just requested them online and then I could go in and pick them up. They are good early reader level with good content. There are others, if I think of them I will try to add them.

Another option kind of like what the other person suggested is to get the other Bible option and let him read that whenever he wants. Who wants to slow your child down reading the Bible after all? The Early Reader's Bible is a little bit easier reading level than The Beginner's Bible but it will still keep him reading.

This was exactly what I was thinking. His heart was broken this morning when I wouldn't let him read more. That just didn't seem right to me. So, I just ordered the other Bible option and paid for quick shipping! The shipping cost more than the Bible, but hey, it's worth it!

Thanks for the help and ideas! :D As always, you ladies are GREAT!
