Catholics using HOD?

Post by HartshornA » Thu Aug 15, 2013 9:56 am

Hi,

My daughter is 3 and I'm considering using HOD for her next year (this year I started with a Little Saints Catholic Program) and then using it for her later years as well. I've heard very positive things about the HOD program, but am wondering if there are any Catholics out there using this program and if so, what Catholic Curriculum do you end up needing to supplement with? I would just like to hear about your experience as a Catholic in general using this program.

Thanks,

Angela

I a not Catholic, but i know there are others that are. Here is one post that might help:

In the first guide (LHTH), you probably won't have to change a thing. Although there is BIble in it, it is more the stories that most kids learn. In LHFHG (second guide), many Catholics replace the Bible study box with a Catholic study. I think this would be the big change for the subsequent guides. And as the link above talks about, Carrie included notes in other guides where the information might not agree with Catholic doctrine.

Thanks, I certainly don't have a problem with my child learning the Bible as I don't think any Catholic would. :) I guess the areas I would probably be more concerned about are the areas in history dealing with the Reformation and such and anything else that might pop up that goes against my Faith. I have looked at some of the other posts dealing with this topic, but haven't seen anything that expands much. Thanks for the help!

First, I am Catholic and do Image of God in place of the bible memorization. So far, it is a really sweet part of our day ad we are all loving it. I have thought about what you asked and have come to two realizations. Personally, I will just skip the parts in LHFHG that deal with the reformation. Its really just a few chapters, not much tweaking, I too, am interested in what others have to say that are doing the upper grades. I feel I want to teach Catholicism, but my husband is not Catholic and so the discussion of various faiths will come up at some point. I will then teach them to be respectful of all Christian faiths. I'm grateful Carrie gives notes for things to tweak, but I too will be following this thread closely as I'm wondering the same things you are.
