Great field trip for Rev to Rev or even Bigger or Beyond
Great field trip for Rev to Rev or even Bigger or Beyond
Just wanted to mention this in case it might be useful for anyone. Yesterday we went to Conner Prairie farm near Indianapolis, IN. My ds is doing Rev to Rev this year and so many thing tied in wonderfully to what he has studied. They have a Prairietown, a Lenape Indian Village, a pretty new part that depicts the Civil War time period and a raid on Dupont Indiana by the Confederate Rebel John Hunt Morgan. There is even a hot air balloon ride that goes up 375 feet. In the Lenape Indian Village they have a Lenape Indian man who leaves his home in Oklahoma to come up in the summers and educate the kids about his people. After reading "Only Their Names Remain" my ds has a new tenderness towards Native Americans and hearing this man talk about his people left a very lasting impression. In Prairietown we watched the potter spin a mug, saw different food being prepared, watched the carpenter work and watched 2 ladies weaving a coverlet that matched one in a picture of Abraham Lincoln that they have. The highlight though was in the trading post. The man in there had just finished making his own replica of a gun that would have been used in 1836. When he saw how interested my dc were he brought it out and let us hold it and even let my dh see how the flint caused a spark when the trigger was pulled. My ds couldn't believe how heavy it was. It brought new meaning to everything he has read about the soldiers running across the fields carrying those guns. In the Civil War experience they have high tech presentations that use screens and 3D images to make it seem like the raiders are right in the store with you. A little scary if you have little kids, but my kids loved it. This was perfect to see after reading "Gabriel's Horses". The other thing ds got to do in the Civil War area was to use the telegraph to send a message. After studying Samuel Morse this was really fun for him. The only negative to the entire trip was there was an entire school of middle schoolers that were very disrespectful and obnoxious. I saw very few adults with them. It did work to our favor though because all the workers in the villages appreciated my dc so much that they gave them special opportunities. So if you live anywhere near Indianapolis and are doing one of the American History guides this might be a good place for a field trip. I went there many times as a kid, but it has really changed and is much better now.

We LOVE Connor prairie! Do you live in the vicinity? We are in Muncie. Hard to believe we might be "neighbors"!

That sounds really great! Your children sound awesome too, btw. There is such a difference between hs children and ps. In our co-op, I am always amazed at the natural way the children of all ages interact with ME. They don't just group together by age but interact with the tinest babies on up to adults... real conversation and eye contact. So I can imagine how pleased the presenters were.
Sometimes at that sort of place there are oppurtunities to volunteer for you and your kids... if you lived close enough that is.
They sure had a range of activities! I would like to see it sometime.

I'm so glad you posted this idea as I have never heard of the place! We are about 3 hours from Indianapolis so this is going to have to go on our list of things to do.

We were there from 10-2:15 and could have stayed longer, but we had to get to my folks house. I would think you could easily stay from 10-5 and find things to do, especially if you have to wait in line for things like the balloon ride. We were some of the few crazy enough to go up in a balloon when it was only 40 degrees.

Lynn, thank you so much for recommending this wonderful place. Our family did visit it just a couple of days ago and my kids were fascinated. There was nothing quite like seeing someone using a loom, pottery being made, the blacksmith at work, and experiencing what school may have been like as if they had really been living at that time. We have read about many of these things but this made it come alive. The highlight for my boys was being able to toss a tomahawk! DD would not smile for a picture taken near a building being burned in the Civil War experience because "this was not a happy event."

Joyful3 I am so glad you were able to go there. It was really cold the day we went. I would love to go back when it is warmer.
