K, but already reading

I am planning to use LHFHG for K, this August, but my son is already a beginning reader. He did Your Baby Can Read as a baby & at age 3 we did Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons & then moved on to Bob Books. What should I do in LHFHG when it says to do phonics?

Can he read Level 2 I can Read books? If not, then you want to use some sort of phonics program to get to that level before starting the Emerging Readers. The Reading Lesson might be a good option. You can go fast through what he already knows, and then slow down at the new things. Phonics Pathways or Explore the Code would be other options.

I'm not sure what level he is at.....how do I know??
But I know he hates phonics & gets bored with it & will eventually hate reading altogether if I try to do anymore phonics with him. That's really not an option & since my husband & I both learned to read without being taught phonics we don't see it as necessary at all.

Public libraries normally have the books. We also own some that we bought at Costco and the local Christian bookstore. Frog and Toad is a good "benchmark" book to see if they are ready for the Emerging Readers. We found that the hardest Bob books were on level with the "My First" I Can Read Books.

Ok, thanks, he's currently in the 2nd set of Bob books, but I'm sure he'll be done with even the 3rd set by the time we begin K.

Depending on how you buy them, there are 4 or 5 sets (Costco has 4 sets because they combine some). We went through all 5 sets then some My First I Can Read books and then some Level 1 I Can Read books before starting the ER set. We already owned the Beginner's Bible, so I knew she could read those stories. But we are only doing 1 story out of the Bible a day most days, although 2 are often scheduled. We are in no hurry to get to DITHOR, and ER books get to a 4th grade reading level by the last book.
