Re: Weekly Review 12/13/10-12/17/10
We had a great week.
week 15 BLHFHG
We made ice cream and cheese this week. The preschooler loved joining in
.It seemed like the perfect time to recite this weeks bible verse[..well done good and faithful servant..]I explained that five minutes might seem like a long time to keep doing something when it looks like nothing ishappening, but if he kept kneeding he would get icecream-just like if we keep doing something that God calls us to do seems hard or boring or difficult -that if we persevere we will get our reward.
Im was amazed this week by Nathan. When we started homeschooling -he could find a million reasons not to do schoolwork. Some were legitimate-he has aspergers and any routine change can really distress him.But sometimes it was just poor attitude. This week we had snow snow and schoolwork got delayed so they could enjoy the rare weather. The afternoon dragged on as Nathan procrastinated on a long list of math problems. As a last resort I gave the compromise-he could stop work to play -but the work would need to be done over the weekend .Initially he acceptedyhe offer -but five minutes later-he switched off the Tv and got out his maths books-saying he would feel much better if he finished his work.
Stanley is still doing M miracles in LHTH and its been delightful to hear him singing that song as he playsduring the day .Nathan has never sung-and I forgotten how lovely it is to hear little ones singing of their own accord. He LOVED doing thge pouring' Oil '

I was fully prepared for any mess,I laid those soakmats everywhere but Stanley was very careful with his applejuice oil pretending to be the widow.

Resurrection to Reformation:
Hardtack. It was some pretty awful stuff that sailors ate when there was nothing else to eat, and I guess it even often had weevils in it. Yuck. My ds had a blast making hardtack for one of his history projects. It was suggested that sailors dipped their hardtack in coffee, tea, etc. to soften it up a bit and and some flavor. Here are my 3 sons eating hardtack...
Wyatt was the dipper...
![Image](http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj8/happymomto3/RTR/th_IMG_1397.jpg)
Riley was the one-bite only guy...
![Image](http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj8/happymomto3/RTR/th_IMG_1394.jpg)
And Emmett had 3 - that's right THREE helpings of it... he asked for it for his snack the next day too...
![Image](http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj8/happymomto3/RTR/th_IMG_1396.jpg)
I much preferred the cookies Wyatt made for history, and so did our in-laws who stopped by for supper...
![Image](http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj8/happymomto3/RTR/th_IMG_1415.jpg)
I honestly think HOD is helping to teach my dc to bake and to cook. Many of the recipes in HOD have become part of my ds's own recipe book, though I believe we'll leave the hardtack out (I guess that recipe may wind up in Emmett's own recipe book someday though!
)
Wyatt continues to add to his HOD Student Notebook. It is so lovely - we especially love all of the artwork and pictures of people we are studying in history:
![Image](http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj8/happymomto3/RTR/th_IMG_1423.jpg)
Hearing Wyatt's narrations (both oral and when he reads his written to me) is something I look forward to. It is the way we share the love of learning history together. I look forward to those, and I like to read the key ideas in the HOD guide for a nice summary of what he read. I'm so thankful for those! We had a wonderful week in RTR and are even doing school through Thursday next week. We want to finish up our DITHOR project and then will take Christmas break. I hope you all had a good week too!
In Christ,
Julie

Bigger Hearts for His Glory:
I did a pitiful job of taking pictures of Riley doing BHFHG this week. It seems one poor child has less pictures than the others each week, and I guess this week it is Riley's turn.
Ironically, we went to full-speed BHFHG this week, and so there were ample moments to take pictures. I just could tell Riley was needing to do BHFHG full-speed now. He was finishing very quickly (like 9:30 AM
), yet still doing excellent work, and then asking for more to do. I left the room to help Emmett with something and came back to find Riley had read and done all of his R & S English on his own, writing it all out and getting it all right.
Anyway, he was just ready. Riley loves school. He never checks the clock, hurries to finish, or wants to be done. This is a blessing most the time, and I am thankful for this, but it is also a challenge, for he never is in a "let's get this done now" mode.
Transitions are hard for him, and that is something we continue to work on inside and outside of our school day. BUT, I am very proud of Riley's work and efforts this week, and I think he has proven he is deserving of being able to do it all. (He wanted full-speed so he could hear "John Audubon for science, The Indian in the Cupboard for Storytime, and the 'red books' for history every day" - his words
). This is Riley with his science notebooking assignment:

Little Hands to Heaven:
I've been letting the older boys come in and help with the get up and move activities now and then. Mainly because Emmett adores them, but also because it gets the wiggles out for all 3 of them.
Acting out different motions like hopping, twirling, skipping, etc. and following stoplight cards for the motions (green = go fast, yellow = go slow, red = stop) was a blast for all of them:
![Image](http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj8/happymomto3/LHTH%20Memory%20Lane/th_IMG_1413.jpg)
Emmett also has gotten better with his fine motor skills. He can now pick up small things and glue them pretty well, and he is starting to mark the Hide and Seek page on his own:
![Image](http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj8/happymomto3/LHTH%20Memory%20Lane/th_IMG_1426.jpg)
We are kind of fluctuating between full-speed and half-speed LHTH each day now. Some days, he just wants more and has the attention span for it, and other days, half is tops for him.
He is our little sweetie-pie, and I love having him to teach LHTH to!
In Christ,
Julie

Re: Weekly Review 12/13/10-12/17/10
We finished up week 16 in both CTC and Beyond - and now we are officially on Christmas Break! ![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)
I am going to do a brief picture highlight this week because I am finding that I have so little time to spend on the computer lately with Christmas coming. Busy, busy, busy.
CTC
This week's focus was on King Nebuchanezzar. This was a statue cookie ds had to make this week. I think ds did a lovely job and he sure tasted good!
Before we cooked him:
![Image](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v606/hiddareboog/IMG_8592.jpg)
After he was cooked and the feet had been crushed with a clean stone...and just before we ate him and named the different places for which each part stood.
![Image](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v606/hiddareboog/IMG_8593.jpg)
Ds's finished version of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. He put a lot of work into this and I think it turned out nicely!
![Image](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v606/hiddareboog/IMG_8736.jpg)
ds is really enjoying Birds of the Air.
![Image](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v606/hiddareboog/IMG_8734.jpg)
And I loved the painting for this week!

Beyond
In Beyond this week, we continued to study the Pilgrims. We are to the point where the Indians, since Chief Massosit's death, have decided to make trouble and we are reading stories about what some children in the colonies did during these dangerous times!
We also finished reading Cricket in Times Square and we will being Key to the Treasure when we return from Christmas Break. For DITHR, ds7 is reading the book My Father's Dragon. We are both really enjoying it! (He is reading it aloud to me, just like he did with Emerging Readers, since he is so young).
Here is a picture of his great spelling test and his Indian blanket from this week.![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)
![Image](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v606/hiddareboog/IMG_8737.jpg)
You can see in this picture that my ds is attempting to teach himself cursive. He is using a very Getty Dubay style all on his own, and Mike and Carrie were kind enough to let me switch out the Cursive book I had purchased (and yet to use) and get the Italic D book for ds7 instead. He is so ready that we are going to go ahead with Getty Dubay Italic D as soon as we get back from Christmas break (using the scheduling in Bigger).
![Image](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v606/hiddareboog/IMG_8739.jpg)
Hope everyone has a MERRY CHRISTMAS! See you after the new year here in the update section!!!!![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)

Here is my very belated post from our week last week. I cut a portion of my index finger off last Tuesday night and it has slowed me down quite a bit. We managed to finish Unit 1 of LHTH and did all of Unit 2 of PHFHG.
http://quietlyrunningtheracehomeschooli ... eview.html
We are currently enjoying a much needed Christmas break.
Rejoicing and remembering our Savior's Birthday!!!
