Revival to Revolution:
Amidst book fairs and editing, it is so nice to be able to count on RevtoRev being so well planned. It is a constant in our day to day, and my ds enjoys it so much. My wonderful Dad filled in and taught a few days for me when I was at some book fairs, and he really enjoyed it. I was so thankful that I didn't have to prepare and plan for the days I was gone. Thanks HOD!
We are nearing the end of RevtoRev, and I am so thankful for the responsibility Wyatt has been able to take on and enjoy this year. He really loves being more in the driver's seat for some of his school work, and he likes to have more say in managing his day. Wyatt is an early morning riser, so he enjoys getting up and doing his science and Bible quiet time from RevtoRev before I even get up. My dh is also up at this time, so it has become a special time for the two of them as well.
Wyatt also chooses the order to do things, which he adores.
He hands in his work on our kitchen counter, open to the pages I am to correct. We then have a meeting time during which we go through his work, do the follow-ups together, and I teach my teacher-directed things. It works out so nicely! We both look forward to it, and he grabs his hot tea and lemon juice, and I grab my coffee. We really enjoy the ebb and flow of our homeschooling day with one another. Often times I am surprised by how much he has finished by the time we meet. He has learned to manage his time and his overall day well - PTL - which will only serve to help him as he grows into a young man!
I have a collection of pictures from the last few weeks that I took that are from various units, as I missed the end of several weeks when I was at book fairs. So, I guess this is a "several weeks" review.
I really liked the way Wyatt's history project turned out - it is just so vibrant! Here you can see his project, and how the HOD Student Book helped him visualize his painting creation...
Here is another picture of a different history project he did. It is a fan he painted and made, with cherry blossoms. I felt the urge to take over the project and insist upon tiny cherry blossoms made 'just so' (a.k.a the way I would have done it), but I held my tongue and let him do it the way he was picturing it. I am glad I have learned not to step in and take over his projects, as art is meant to be a creative outlet for the artist to express individuality. Of course I have figured this out because I did sometimes used to step in and take over.
Anyway, he really enjoyed this project too...
In DITHOR, we have been thoroughly enjoying ourselves. We had some laughs this week! Wyatt had to portray his main character for our discussions, and his main character was a horse. He smiled from ear to ear and said, "Emmett, I NEED you!" (and of course Emmett loves to be needed
). He surprised me by having Emmett ride in on him like he was a horse, and they all loved hamming it up for the discussion.
Riley's portrayal of his main character was also funny, as Miss Agnes was his main character. Miss Agnes dressed in a plaid jacket on the cover of the book though, so Riley didn't have to get to "girlied" up.
He did have fun pretending to be Miss Agnes! I think he would be quite an animated teacher!
One of my favorite parts of DITHOR this last week was the point of view/perspective lesson. Each of the boys took a turn at being the reporter asking questions about the other who was to be an expert on that particular character. They really got into it and sounded like pretty authentic reporters with their microphone. Emmett and I just watched, and laughed, and clapped a lot.
