Re: Week in Review 5/10 - 5/14
I'll share from our first week of using LHTH with our DD and DS2. I don't know how to post photos so I'll just have to share with words.
The first two days DD was very eager to do everything, singing, reading and of course any projects...she loves to do hands on stuff. By day 3, she just slumped in the chair and watched DS2 and I do the songs and reading. She runs to the table for any projects...she will be my hands on learner.
I was really excited to see how much DD's fine motor skills have improved, she kept all the cereal glued onto her A within the lines. She was also tracing the letters with crayons. We used printed pages. Both kids loved the letter A taped on the floor. DS2 even has been pointing out "a" when he sees it.
We had fun and it seemed like just enough work for DD. I think she just needs to get used to it being part of her day.

Re: Week in Review 5/10 - 5/14
My dd finished Unit 32 of LHTH - only 1 more unit to go! She loved twisting foil for her art project this week to go with the story of Peter being released from prison. She asked me to draw an angel on white paper - so I did and we glued it outside the bars with the glowing yellow paper as the background.
My ds completed day 3 of Unit 33 of LHFHG today. He is begging me to go visit the East - Philadelphia, Washington DC and Boston...all places I've been and have told him about them as we read about the landmarks each day. If $ didn't matter - we'd be traveling this summer for sure!!!
He really enjoyed making a pendulum the day we read about the Liberty Bell. We used dd's metal toy spoons & pots. Both kids had pendulums swinging & hitting their pots - it was loud, but they enjoyed it!
My ds is loving the stories from our last storytime book (Peter Rabbit & other tales)...he thought Hunca Munca was such a funny name yesterday. And today it was "Mrs. Tiggy-winkle" which I have trouble saying correctly which makes it even more funny.
As an "extra" (non-HOD) activity this week, he read through the book, Follow That Map aloud. It takes the kids through various types of maps, legends, directions, etc. At the end of the book it gave directions how to draw a map of your bedroom. My ds LOVED this project - walking off the paces in his room, counting the squares on the graph paper (1 pace = 1 square), using a ruler to make the lines straight...below he's showing off his bedroom map.
Have a great weekend, everyone!

Re: Week in Review 5/10 - 5/14
I didn't manage to take any pictures this week, but I will post a week in review anyway. We finished our second to last week in Preparing. It is hard to believe it. At the end of the day today I said something about only one week left and Noah grabbed his Preparing manual and was hugging it, saying "no, I don't want it to be done". We have been learning about WWII this week. I have to admit that after I read Anne Frank in Junior High I have avoided reading about WWII. I think I have learned as much as he has. We watched a cool presentation on the Pearl Harbor website that Carrie gives a link to in the guide. Noah had never heard of Pearl Harbor so we had a good discussion around that. He has loved the book "Twenty and Ten", Today when we stopped reading at a very suspenseful part he begged and begged for me to continue reading. I like how this book shows how evil Hitler and the Nazi's were without being too intense. He also is really enjoying reading Little Riders on his own. I feel like he has received a very age appropriate introduction to WWII.
In Science he has enjoyed reading about Albert Einstein and today he learned how light travels for his science experiment. In Poetry he is memorizing "My Treasures".
One more story I wanted to share. He had a cold this week and really didn't feel great, but he still did school. One day during our after lunch break that we take he fell asleep in the recliner. I was just going to let him sleep. He woke up about 15 minutes later and I told him that I had planned to let him sleep. He said "mom you can't do that I would miss out on doing the rest of my stuff for the day and I would hate that." I just love that he enjoys history that much. I sure didn't when I was his age and just memorizing things from text books.

Christi,
I loved hearing about your start with LHTH! The time spent in God's word, singing, playing, and working through the Bible stories are favorite memories of mine that I treasure as my boys are growing up too fast!
Creativemommy,
I cannot believe that you are almost done with LHTH and LHFHG! I'm so glad that your daughter loved her project for this week. How neat that she asked you to draw the angel. It shows she really understood the story about Peter. I'm so glad that your son is enjoying the stories in LHFHG and that he is so interested in American history. I want to go visit the East too!
Lynn,
It's hard to believe that Noah is only one week away from finishing Preparing Hearts! We loved doing it last year too and were sad to see it end. I'm glad that you felt the WWII time period was handled well within Preparing Hearts. I had a similar frightening experience with WWI and II content in my college days, and it really stayed with me. So, we worked to make sure the content on this topic would help the kiddos understand the war, without terrifying them.
Thanks for sharing ladies! I loved the sneak peeks: D
Blessings,
Carrie

Christi, I'm excited to be able to read about your experience with LHTH from the very start. I am looking forward to starting it with my DS and DD in the new year and no pressure but I will be looking for your weekly updates so I can experience LHTH vicariously through you and your little ones until then.Christi in Ohio wrote:I'll share from our first week of using LHTH with our DD and DS2. Re: Week in Review 5/10 - 5/14
Hi all! Summer is so close can almost taste it, but we are not done yet with school. Its okay though. Currently dd Kasey is working through Unit 18 of CTC (I had hoped to be near done at this point). I wanted to share this thought. Since beginning CTC I have watched dd blossom with her reading and writing skills. She has begun to gain a love for history. Her work habits have improved and I can depend on her to work majority of the day without me standing over her. I have seen the love of learning return to her heart. So even though I sit and look at a manual that we are half way through I am blown away at how much she has retained and grown through using CTC. Thank you Carrie and the ladies of the board for so much support through this school year!
