Science in "Little Hearts"?

Post by my2guys » Wed Jan 23, 2008 9:18 am

I was just wondering if those of you who have done "Little Hearts" could give me an idea of what science topics are covered and how often and in what way. I'm thinking through the next couple of years (preK and K) and trying to figure out if I want to start "Little Hearts" for preK and stretch it over two years or if I want to wait to start "Little Hearts" for K and just supplement with other things until we get there (possibly even starting mid year - next January - right after he turns 5). What I'm struggling with right now is wondering if ds (just turned 4) is going to be interested enough in the history portion for it to work. I think his interest is more in science activities right now. Although he does enjoy hearing Bible stories. So anyway, just wondering what the science in "Little Hearts" is like. Also what is the ratio of science to history? Thanks ladies!

We are currently in unit 19 of Little Hearts. History is everyday however we just finished biblical history so it is a gentle intro to history. My guy loves bible stories too and so I have just introduced the bible stories as history to get him use to the idea of doing history. Also the stories are short and sweet so very easy for the busy guys to sit through.

As far as science goes it is scheduled 2 times each week. It would be very easy to expand upon the science topics if you want but I don't find that to be necessary. The other activities - art, drama, thinking games are enough for my guy. The topics are focused on the days of creation. HTH

Hmmm...actually that helps a lot! :D
I didn't realize that that much of the history was biblical history. I think that would get him interested right away. And if I start it in the fall, we'll actually only be doing one page a day, so that will give him even longer to "ease into it". Also love the fact that the science is linked to the days of creation. That was exactly what I was wishing for. Well now I'm excited because I'm thinking this could work for us sooner that I thought! YAY! (This really IS the perfect curriculum  )

One of our favorite parts of Little Hearts is the science experiments. My kids love them! :D

Sharon,

Actually the moment you said he likes Bible stories I knew you would be OK here. The history is really very linked to God and it reads very much the same way a Bible story would. I think if he likes that and Science you have got a great match. I am doing it a little slower than normal. but that is not because it is too much or not perfect for us. It is actually because I started with my 5 year old and my 3 year old tagged along just for fun. But soon it got serious for her and she wanted to do it all and hear it all and would cry if I left her out. So what am I going to say, no you can't love this now we have to wait. So very soon into it I linked her in for everything. So because I want to keep them in HOD for the long haul doing it slow is just from looking down the path and wanting them to be age appropriate for everything all the way to the end. I am really basing it more on skill than age. But just o ou know she is a bouncy thing but she will sit still to do the entire HOD day in the guide then we break and do her LA and Math. And because she insists on doing everything and knows what comes next we can't even stretch it out the way others are. But hey, having a kid love it too much is not a problems really is it!

YAY! YAY! YAY! I'm so excited. If the kids weren't napping right now I'd be shouting for joy. :D
