We listened to King of the Wind on CD from the library last year and my kids did fully understand what was going on. The 21 Balloons was one of my all-time favorite books as a child, but I was more like 4th grade.
I happened to find A Lion to Guard Us at St. Vinnie's so that's what we are using.

Re: Bigger-spelling or dictation???
I think you should go ahead with dictation. Level 1 is pretty easy with nice short sentences. I started with son with spelling List 2 in Bigger and it was too easy for him, but I wanted to build his confidence. About halfway through the year, we switched to dictation level 1. I *meant* to do it over...

Re: How fast should my son get through books?
My son is the exact same way. He sits down with a boxcar children book and has it done in an hour. School books have to go by the schedule; I do not let him go ahead.

I do not remember coming across any other typos in the guide. Your morning board sounds like a great idea!

Re: Preparing Hearts Beginning Question
She means binders. Thanks! When you say "notebook" do you mean a three ring binder or a spiral bound notebook? I have gone through the intro again and written a list out and your suggestions are great.

Re: Preparing half-speed schedule?
Christine, I am pasting a schedule for half speed Preparing written by Carrie from a previous thread. Hope this helps :D :D Perhaps from the left side of the Preparing Hearts plans you could do the Reading About History box, the rotating box (which really needs to go with the Reading About History ...

Re: Does HOD plan to use any other Hymns for a Kids Heart?
That is a good question. My kids loved vol. 1 in Bigger. I was going to buy the rest of the series until I saw Vol. 2 scheduled in the new guide.

Preparing half-speed schedule?
I'm going to use Preparing at half-pace with my 9yo son. I've thought about doing left side one day, right side the next, but that seems too uneven with all the history on one side and the other academics on the other side. I'd like it a little more balanced but can't quite wrap my mind around it ye...

Re: Need Recomendations for audio books
We usually have an audio book in the car. Last year we listened to Misty of Chincoteague, then Stormy, Misty's Foal (Marguerite Henry). The other favorites were all the Henry Huggins books by Beverly Cleary. I much prefer those to the Ramona books as the Ramona books have sibling problems.

Re: LHFHG half speed
I just thought I could add that if you wanted some more workbooks, you could get the other Rod & Staff ABC series books. My daughter did them all the way up through H (before I was published) and really enjoyed them.
