Re: Really Need Advice!!

I have a son who is dyslexic and another child who does very well (19 months apart) and I fully agree with Lynn. Trying to combine them will just create more problems in the end. The pp had a good point too - as they move forward in the guides there is a lot of independent work and your son will sti...

Re: HELP

I agree with the pp. Skip the extensions, give the youngers a week off and get your olders on a good track. When my son started his new guide this year I sat right with him for a whole unit to guide him and make sure he knew what was expected. Once you get them on the right track, begin the youngers...

Re: Back to back guides?

The biggest issue with back-to-back guides are the most teacher intensive ones will land together. You will have two tough years, Beyond/Bigger and Bigger/Preparing. Bigger and Preparing are two guides where there is lots of training and skill mastery. That doesn't mean it can't be done, it just mea...

Re: I am sooo overwhelmed!!!!

I just helped a friend set up grading for the Geography guide and we made a couple of rubrics. We looked at: - directions were followed - student was prepared for the assignment - student had appropriate knowledge of the content - effort There was one more that I can't remember. Basically she is goi...

Re: Res to ref writing

We are not too far in, but I love IEW. My son struggled last year with Write With the Best, but the structure of the IEW lessons are just what he needs. The checklists to help him remember to use strong verbs/ adjectives, etc. are great for him. With IEW, there is a topic to work from and the studen...

Re: I would love to know more about HOD Science

I was one of those moms who wondered about science when we were in the lowest guides, but as we have progressed I can tell you the science is just right! If you make a list of the concepts they learn each year, it is long. And like you said, living books are so much better in terms of holding intere...

Re: TERRIFIED

We just started R2R this summer and we are totally in a great routine; it is going much smoother than CTC did at the beginning for us. You might want to consider doing something I did for the first time when starting R2R(wished I had done it for CTC). I spent the first unit with just my son and my o...

Re: Struggling with The Reading Lesson

Basically agreeing with the other posters and Carrie's advice. Age is really a factor with boys. My older boy, who is a born student, still struggled some at young 7. By end 7 he started to take off and by end 8 he was well above grade level. My younger son, a definite struggling reader took a long ...

Re: Please help me Simplify!!!

Carrie just replied to another thread that might interest you, http://www.heartofdakota.com/board3/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=16666. I see your son is 7, so I would definitely take that into consideration. Our son is 8, turns 9 in November and he struggles with reading. He is probably dyslexic, if not that...

Re: RtoR Encouragement needed :)

My son (age 10) also wanted me to read everything to him, but at the end of CTC I told him he was going to have to start reading himself, as that is the best way to really remember the information. We started with him reading to me, but he soon tired of that and when I suggested he read history alon...

Re: Alternatives to "Screen Time"

Our boys get 3 1/2 hours per week, no more than 1 hour per day and no more than 15 minutes of video games per day, with a 1 hour cap on video games per week. No screen time is allowed until school work is done. They each have a screen time chart and they cross off 15 minute squares. The video square...

Re: Balancing RtR and Beyond

We just started R2R and I have a younger in Bigger. I can see it would be a real adjustment if you were new to HOD. I read the manual and decided I would take a week to just work with my son in R2R and give my younger a week off. I highly recommend you do that. I spent time with him going over every...

Re: Considering, questions

If you haven't looked at the placement chart yet, I would certainly start there, weighing the 1st set of boxes the most. You can find it here, http://www.heartofdakota.com/placing-your-child.php. You could probably place your 4th and 5th grader in the same guide, placing them each in math, English, ...

Re: Question about Medieval History-Based Writing Lessons

My 10-yr-old 5th grader (this fall) has just started the writing program and although we have only finished unit 2, so far it is going fine for him and we are finding it easier than "Write With the Best" from last year. My son is somewhat of a struggling writer. Last year we struggled, but I saw goo...
