Re: Homeschooling an ADHD/defiant child? struggling to decide

Nici, My ds (8) is ADHD. Sorry, I have no knowledge of ODD. But we decided from the beginning to homeschool our ds. We thought he would become the quiet kid in the back of the room that never learned anything. After speaking with the pediatrician several times, he has agreed that ds is in the best s...

Re: Hitting a wall with Emerging Readers - what to do?

Sharon, I agree with prev posters. We had the exact same thing happen with our ds in the exact same spot. I pushed on thru Prairie School and had tears. We stopped and did what you are thinking and came back to Prairie School about a month later and he did fine. He seemed to just need alittle more p...

Re: Teaching Multiplication/Division

If you add skip counting, I highly recommend using a number board as they learn them. We use Horizons Math and they do a lot of skip counting in 1st grade. At first, I thought this was ridiculous. A 1st grader counting by 9's?! Then, I gave him the number board, had him figure out the numbers and st...

Re: O/T-Prayers please for my littlest guy

Dear Jessica, Lifting your little guy up in prayer this morning! Oh, I know the worrying. My oldest just finally got better after 2 months with a concussion. She didn't eat much for a while either, but she slept and slept and slept. It is scary, but God is with you and him and he will give you guys ...

Re: Seriously frusterated

First, I agree with Tansy, get her eyes checked (my son's were ok, but my nephew's were not and it made all the difference in the world to my nephew). Otherwise, we are doing Beyond and my ds did not want to copy the poems. It was the same scenario as yours. So we took a break. Got his eyes checked....

Re: OT: Sinking Fast! Need Prayer!

Just prayed for you!! These are no fun. I have suffered these too. Although, they have seemed to have disappeared since having my last child! You could try having another   Otherwise, I would second what Heather said. Excedrin Migraine were a miracle drug for me. I did get imetrix shots in...

Re: Is reading like potty training....

Just be patient ladies. 2 1/2 years ago I was scared to death to try to teach my son to read. We used Reading Made Easy. It's a great program, but we started then stopped. We needed to wait for him to really get that concept. He just got stuck. Then we started again. Then a few weeks later we stoppe...

Re: New Intro

Hi Erin,
Welcome to the group!!!

I "stumbled" (was led) to HOD a few year ago too. We really like it and have loved watching our kids grow in the Lord. HOD is an amazing program and I hope enjoy it as much as we do!

Re: The HOD booth was a hoppin' place...

Pictures. Now, that would of been a great idea. My husband and I were there too. The biggest thing we got from the convention was confirmation that loving the Lord is the most important thing that we can instill in our children. YES, academics are important, but God and our moral character must be f...

Re: Curriculum pet peeves - Sorry, I just can't relate!

Julie, We were just talking about complaining (more specific - ungratefulness) in our prayer group last night. How when we let it start to take over in our conversations, it weakens us in other areas of our life. We are more apt to say mean words to others or not do our best work, or whatever. I don...

Re: Questions from Minnesota

Jessica, Welcome! I'm from MN, but by no means an expert on all the rules (MACHE is a GREAT resource for all the legal stuff). MACHE has a beginning homeschooling session at their conference coming up in April. They go thru all the rules and explain everything really well. Hang in there. It is overw...

Re: Half speed?

Hi! We are doing Beyond half speed right now. My husband was fine with doing Beyond over 2 years, but we both wanted ds to stay on level with reading and math. So after much thought this is what we are doing. We do the Reading box (the emerging readers) and Math Box every day. Then one day we do the...

Re: Not getting the expected answer.....

Julie, it would be great if we could all respond this way. The faith of a child! We have been learning the verses Matt 6:19-21 this week also and it has been interesting to see his face when I ask him if he is storing up treasures in heaven or on earth. His response has been better than expected. It...

Not getting the expected answer.....

As part of storytime today, ds was supposed to pick a character he would like to have as a friend. Then based on what you know of this character, think of a gift that they might like. We are reading Benjamin West and ds picks Jacob. I'm thinking that a good gift would be a cat (cause he gave Grimalk...
