Re: UPS delivered today! Have a question about BIGGER

You don't really need to write anything down for R&S English. Instead of writing the nouns, they just tell you what the nouns are. All that writing doesn't serve much purpose. Instead of re-writing the sentence in past tense, they just tell it to you. If you have 2 students, you should probably get ...

Re: Do Beyonds read alouds or ???

I think some of the suggestions are more appropriate for younger kids than others. I looked in the guide quick, and these are my ideas: Bio: Helen Keller would be great for that age. The D'Aulaires books would work, too. Adventure, I don't don't know if any of the ones in the guide would work for a ...

Re: Behind in Beyond, finish it before starting Bigger??

You've still got quite a bit left, I would finish it. We did Beyond on a 4-day schedule and stopped on Unit 28. We will pick up with Unit 29 in August. Yes, it does feel strange to not follow the school year schedule, but I don't want her getting into the guides too young anyway.

Re: Bridging the Storytime Gap Between Guides

Beyond storytime is by genre, so they don't directly relate to the History.

There are tons more Burgess animal books, just get another one when you finish all the scheduled storytime books to fill in your gap. You could ask your kids which animal they'd like to read about.

Re: Christian missionary biographies

I've read Missionary Stories with the Millers to my daughter this year and a few of the stories are scary but it's probably the best option for the age of your child. It's easy to skip a chapter if it would be too much for a child. I've been collecting the YWAM series. They are well-written. My 10 y...

Re: Social studies and health

I picked up the Abeka health textbook pretty cheaply used. That's what I'd recommend for you since you need to have a book for the form. It's only a 9 week program so it would be easy to fit in, even over the summer. luv2homeschool, do you remember what the book was called? Looking at the Abeka web...

Re: Placement help!! 1st grade!

Singapore math has its own placement test that you can use:
http://www.singaporemath.com/Placement_s/12.htm

I would suggest using 1A/1B, though, because of the excellent activities scheduled in Beyond to correspond with the lessons.

He sounds like an emerging reader to me.

Re: PHFHG alternative to Heaven's Heroes?

We read through Hero Tales with our co-op this year, plus DS has read many of the "Christian Heroes Then & Now" books which were about the same missionaries in the Hero Tales book. We still read Hero Tales as scheduled in the guide and he never made a peep about repeating it. It's not scheduled unti...

We also always have an audiobook in the car, where we've been going through the classics, and we have a chapter book at bedtime, which is one of the Chrisitan Heroes Then & Now books.

Re: Dug up some of my old books

We just listened to the Heidi audio book in the car and the kids really enjoyed it. For a read aloud, I would think it's okay for a 2nd grader. My son loves any kinds of books and did like this one, but if your son is picky, he might not like it. It's pretty girl-focused. The LIttle Prince is odd. H...

Re: Dictation worked!

That is great news! I am really hoping it kicks in for us. DS is a horrible speller. We've been doing dictation all this year and, while he gets the passages correct, nothing has clicked beyond that. His written narrations take forever because he is constantly asking me how to spell words or look th...
