Re: Drawn into the Heart of Reading--Am I missing something?
In the introductory pages of DITHOR under "Program Structure," I read, "Each of the nine units contains 20 days of instruction. Using all nine units in one year provides 36 weeks of instruction, which is equivalent to the common 180 day school year." Then on the next page under "General Daily Format...

Narrations
We are just starting out and learning how to do narrations. In CTC I read somewhere that a timer should be set for 3-5 minutes for a narration. The problem we've had so far is that it is not taking nearly that long. My boys get it all done in just a few seconds! Honestly, after reading only a paragr...

Dictation
Is there a difference in how I implement the dictation exercises with the following statements?: "Have students complete the first studied dictation exercise (see Appendix for directions and passages)." (Day 1) "Have students complete one studied dictation exercise (see Appendix for directions and p...

Re: Drawn into the Heart of Reading--Am I missing something?
Goodness, now that I've had more time to investigate and look ahead in the CTC Lesson Plans, I do see that every Day 3 of a unit is an off day for DITHOR. Thank you for your explanation. Therefore, the student isn't doing any reading of their books (for DITHOR) on Day 3. In actuality Day 3 of readin...

Re: Drawn into the Heart of Reading--Am I missing something?
Thank you all for your replies. Your replies, and reading the "Getting Started" section through a few additional times, has cleared things up a bit. Sometimes it also helps to just "jump in" and start and then one begins to get the flow. Another couple of questions that came up: I see that 5 days is...

Drawn into the Heart of Reading--Am I missing something?
Today we are doing a trial of the first day of school. Is there a place that lists a schedule for the books we selected to use with Drawn into the Heart of Reading ? In looking through the Teacher's Guide, I see that the students are to fill-in an Assigned Reading Calendar, but I thought that since ...

Re: Grammar Placement
The problem I seem to have is not knowing WHEN enough written work (or anything school related, really) is enough. If I get tears or complaints, I give up and stop a lesson. I fear that I'm just letting them off too easily and am rewarding laziness. I don't seem to have any instincts in this area. (...

Re: Grammar Placement
I think I saw *somewhere* that Rod and Staff also has a workbook or worksheets to go along with each level (in addition to the hardcover student text and the teacher's manual as recommended in the HOD catalog). Both of my boys are "allergic" to pencils and writing (one has a movement disorder) and t...

Re: Grammar Placement
Thank you for your reply. The game plan is to continue on with Heart of Dakota in the future, but this year is kind of like a "trial year" seeing how things work for us.

Grammar Placement
We ordered CTC at a homeschool convention and originally had planned on using another grammar program. Now I am leaning toward R&S, but I need guidance in choosing the particular level. I have two boys, ages 10 and 12. We don't really "do" grades, but they started "formal" schooling at age 6 so they...
