It sounds like you are all settled on your plan, but I'll toss in my .02 anyhow! Repetition of science concepts and experiments can be... FUN! My 6 1/2 yo still gets excited about gathering items for a round of "sink or float" experimentation. She still likes to do bark rubbings with pa...

RME is highly scripted. As Debbie mentioned, RME can be a lot of work. It incorporates writing, drawing, and activities with copywork and flash cards. It doesn't have to be used that way though. My dd wasn't ready for writing activities, so we skipped all of those. We just did the reading portion an...

I'll be doing Beyond with my dd, who turns 7 in September. I haven't decided when to start, but I'm sure it will be mid-summer. We will be using DITHOR as well. This is my first HOD curriculum, and I am excited.

I have Peggy Kaye's book. It has some fun ideas. Marilyn Burns also puts out some fun math activity books. I haven't tried them yet. The living math yahoo group that Pjdobro mentioned is a great resource too. Have fun! 8)

Hi Patti! My dd sounds much like yours. She will be 7 in September (1st grade). I went ahead and ordered DITHOR to go with Beyond. If it is too much for her, I can switch down to the Emergent Readers. Another thing to consider is how much growth in ability could happen during the four months between...

We are only in the first grade books. So far, it has been easy to teach. A friend told me that it became more difficult in the third grade level, so she switched. She had not tried any of the supports though. I figure that if it gets confusing, I can always order the Home Instructor Guide. A lot of ...

I feel the same way. I have always wanted to *click* with MFW, since so many people seem to love it. I never did though- especially since the phonics are so intertwined in K and 1. The first time I stumbled across HOD, I thought, "This is it!" It seemed perfect for what I want to do with my dd. I wa...

:D Hi Marty

ETC is Explode the Code. I think they are designed to help teach reading, but I use them to help with writing. HTH!

I've ordered!

I'm very excited! I can't wait to actually get my hands on everything and see how it all ties together. I ordered BLHFHG and the 2/3 level of DITHOR. I loved the sample of DITHOR and hope it isn't too much writing for dd. If it is, I'll just work through the emergent reader assignments. I can still ...

Are many of you doing K with a 6 yr old?? :D I did! My dd turned 6 in early September. I am in no hurry to see her grow up. We called this year kindergarten, which is also how she would have been placed in ps. I didn't know about LHFHG, but it would have really appealed to her. We had a very gentle...

Thank you!

That is exactly what I needed to know! Except for the picture study, it seemed to duplicate what you are already providing in Beyond. It seems like Beyond has nearly everything I wanted for dd next year! I'm just thrilled not to be the one doing the planning... I get carried away.

Thanks for the welcome, Candice.

Thanks for the extra input, Carrie. It's good to hear that she can start Beyond in 1st without throwing the other years off. She is solidly there on the placement chart.

Thanks, everyone!

Thanks, Tansy. I do think the book list would be worth the cost. I hadn't been planning grammar for our first grade year, and wasn't interested in FLL. From what I see about BLHFHG, I think that will be plenty of grammar, maybe even more than I had intended. I have seen info about Queen's Language L...
