Preparing- deluxe vs. extension
I'm looking into Preparing next year, but have a question about independent reading. The set includes read alouds (basic), younger independent reading (deluxe), and older independent reading (extension). Would an older student read only the books in the extension set or would they also be expected t...

Re: Coming Back to HOD
Our 9 year olds sound very very similar. My guy just started really reading (moving past sounding everything out) this year. I placed him in Bigger for next year. Based on his reading level (I wouldn't feel comfortable with him independently reading his assignments yet) and his writing stamina, I th...

Re: Understanding the differences between HOD and Sonlight
Out of all of the comparisons and reviews of these two programs on the web, I think this is hands-down the best review I've read. Awesome job. I've often looking longingly at their catalog. We tried their kindergarten and it was a flop for us. So much random jumping around on topics. Nothing seemed ...

Re: Placement help-Preparing
Isn't it interesting to see how the Good Lord works, in hindsight?
You took a break and worked on some needed skills this year and lo and behold he's still right on track. He was making sure that your son was in Preparing next year instead of this year.

Updated K math plans?
The guide I was gifted is 2007. It schedules Kindergarten Mathematics 2a /2b. I know it's been updated in the newer versions of the guide. Is there a downloadable schedule somewhere so that I can update these plans?

Emerging readers and supplemental books
My daughter has started the Emerging Readers set. She is over the moon excited to have her own Bible to read to me! I see in the Emerging Readers schedule that there are supplemental books listed. How should those be used? Also, would you allow a child to work through the schedule as quickly as they...

Singapore 1a 1b
What else do I need in order to successfully teach this program? Flashcards, specific manipulatives? Does primary mathematics have children memorize math facts?
Thanks

Storytime for all guides?
Okay, so we're coming from a different curriculum where we could just choose one read aloud set and use it as a family read aloud for everybody. Is that true with Heart of Dakota too? Or do you make a point to read each child's assigned read-aloud from the Storytime box everyday? I'm specifically lo...

Re: Half speed
That's what I was thinking. Otherwise you'd have an easy/fun day and then a hard day. I'm thinking I might get hives only doing math 2 or 3 times a week, but in your experience it works out okay through the year?

Half speed
Sounds silly, I'm sure. But, how do you go half speed? I asked some questions on another post about placement and several ladies said that I should start out half speed. But, I'm not sure how to do it. Would you just do the left page one day and the right page the next? Or would you do half of each ...

Re: Thinking this through (ie. Planning)
So, the consensus seems to be split. Half say put them together in Beyond. Half say put the older in Bigger and the younger in either Little Hearts or Beyond. Looking through everything the internet offers on Beyond, it seems to cover Early American history pretty well. Sadly were doing in-depth ear...

Re: Thiking this through (ie. Planning)
Thanks for that advice ladies. I think the 6 year old, turns 7 in October, would be bored spending an entire year with Little Hearts. She needs to be mentally challenged or she finds some way to challenge herself and gets into mischief. I put together a tentative schedule for next year and I feel ov...

Thiking this through (ie. Planning)
So, I was gifted a copy of Little Hearts and thus launched into this HOD world. I have always been curious about HOD, but never jumped in until receiving this set and I'm not quite sure where to place my children. My plan is to use Little Hearts this summer as just a fun academic-y time filler to ke...
