Re: Spelling Woes

I do not have any experience with this yet, as my children are very young, but when you said that the majority of the errors had to do with visually identifying incorrectly spelled words, I just wondered if he is having problems because he just isn't a visual learner? I have always been a good spell...

Re: Spiral Bound Guides???

I had my LHFHG manual spiral bound at Staples this past fall and I do not regret it so far! It has been very sturdy for us and I love that it lays flat. I did have the front and back covers laminated which make them very sturdy and protective, but I am careful when I handle the manual. We have not h...

Re: Book substitutions for LHFHG in place of Thornton Burges

I will say we had the same issues. My kids LOVE reading and books, as do I, but my son and I both disliked the Burgess books at the beginning of the year. After about half of Reddy Fox we dropped it and switched the the Potter books, which we liked much better, even though they were about as difficu...

Re: Anyone using HOD with McGuffey Readers?

Yep, you can use whatever you would like! We used a program called Reading Reflex and then moved to the McGuffey readers for awhile before switching to the Emerging Readers (from Beyond, even though we are still in Little Hearts for His Glory). That's what's so nice about HOD...the flexibility! Hope...

Re: Standardized Testing

Carrie, thank you for your helpful reply! Do you know how I would figure out what exactly is required for testing where I live? I have read things about MN in general, but it seems that it depends on the district. Do you have an idea of the person or dept. I should contact to ask which tests they wi...

Re: Standardized Testing

Oh, I just looked the survey up and it looks like it's been replaced with the Terra Nova/CAT 6. I wonder how the 1970 CAT version compares.

Re: Standardized Testing

Thank you both. Good to hear about the science. I was looking into the 1970 version of the CAT test on Christian Liberty's site... is that the same as the survey? I've also heard good things about the PASS test, but not sure it would be accepted in my district. I just don't love the idea of timed te...

Standardized Testing

Hi, I'm in MN, so starting in 2nd grade, my kids will have to be tested (scores are not sent in, but if child scores 30% or below, further testing for learning disabilities is required). I have been reading about the more common tests, and I'm leaning towards either the Iowa Basics test or the CAT. ...

Re: Physical Education in HOD?

Yeah, the co-ops around here don't offer it, which is why I'm asking. I will see about the Y, but do you need to belong in order to take classes there?

Re: Physical Education in HOD?

Thanks. I guess, because I really didn't learn the rules to most sports or participate in any, I missed out on a lot of opportunities, and I don't know how to teach those things to my kids now. That's why I'm wondering if there are any structured or scripted P.E. lessons included in HOD. If not, I m...

Physical Education in HOD?

Hi, My son is in LHFHG this year, so I'm just thinking ahead here, but I'm wondering if HOD's curricula include P.E. somehow? If not, are there recommendations for what to do in all levels? I know many homeschoolers make use of the community sports and such, but I'm wondering if there is something e...

Re: Another Question - LHFHG - Italic?

Hi there! I will chime in here as I have a son in LHFHG and we are going the Italic route. I chose this method because I was taught it when I was home schooled, and I love the transition from the basic italic print to the cursive italic (it is pretty seamless). All my life I was complimented on my h...

Re: Placement Questions and Emerging Readers

Good to know, thanks! Oh, if I remember right, I LOVED Stone Fox when I was little. Glad I'll get to re-read it with the kids! Yes, my son has finished 3 of the emerging reader books in about a week of school! We will be starting Wagon Wheels next week. I can see how it is helpful for their comprehe...
