Thanks, Lynn! I love those ideas!!!
Right now she really just looks it over and tries to get it over with as fast as possible. This seems to work for dictation, but not to get it to stick any longer than that. We're going to try this!

Dictation woes
Will you help me talk through dictation woes!? First off, I'd like to say that I see the immense benefits of using dictation! My 6th (almost 7th) graders are turning into great spellers - not perfect, but will only get a couple of words spelled wrong in their written narrations and other writing ass...

Re: Reading Struggles
My little boy just turned 8 on Monday. Reading has been difficult for him too. I tried The Reading Lesson with him a couple times, but it just wasn't working for him. He also used Logic of English's Foundations A-C (which worked better for him, but got to be too much). Now he's slowly working his wa...

Re: Schoolwork is a race
This is our situation too! My oldest two are also doing Res. to Ref. It has really helped to get them each their own guide, but other than that, they have to share everything. They are very competitive with one another, and there have been tears if one person starts ahead of the other, or if...

Re: Struggling with The Reading Lesson
Oh, you ladies are so, so helpful! Thank you! :D Reading through all of your comments has been a sweet blessing. It's also helped me to realize that it's probably more *me* than *him.* I think I'm simply tired of this early reading stage (not just from him, but from all of my sweet children o...

Struggling with The Reading Lesson
My 7 year-old, second grade boy is really struggling with The Reading Lesson. (Or, maybe it's me that's struggling.) I would love some advice, encouragement, and ideas as to what to do with my energy filled little man. :D When he was 5 1/2 we started The Reading Lesson. We made it through about Less...

Re: Stuggling to sound words out phonetically
Carrie, Thank you so very much for taking the time to give such a thoughtful response! I am truly grateful for the wisdom, experience, helpfulness, and kind encouragement you shared. I know I will be reading your response over many, many times (even in the years to come), for there is such depth to ...

Re: Stuggling to sound words out phonetically
Thank you ladies for your kind encouragement! It is amazing how a day and a little extra perspective can help. I do have her reading to me every day - with DITHOR books, Bible reading, and/or reading sections from her independent history on the days that it is scheduled. And she does seem to ...

Re: Stuggling to sound words out phonetically
Wow! I didn't expect to feel so discouraged (although appreciative) after reading everyone's replies. :( As I was typing my original post - I did fear that it would come off worse than it actually was/is - and maybe it did. Honestly, I think the most disheartening thing right now is that we have fol...

Stuggling to sound words out phonetically
What would you do with an almost fourth grader (in the fall) who really struggles to sound words out phonetically? She learned to read using The Reading Lesson - them moved into the Emerging Readers Set - and now has read all of the Level 2 books and is working her way through the Level 3 books with...

Re: When does Spelling get better?
Thank you everyone! At this point she hasn't really shown any signs of dyslexia or any vision problems... just a creative way of spelling. I know it takes different skills (& probably much more time) for kids to get better at spelling during everyday writing activities. How should spelling lo...
