Re: Placement Help LHFHG or Beyond
I don't know if it will work for you - but in my quest for the perfect HOD program.. I now own LHFHG - PHFHG. For my 7 year old (VERY reluctant at darn near everything but getting dirty)... I use LHFHG history, science, art, and fine motor skills with BLHFHG math activities and language arts... but ...

Re: DITHR 2/3 and Bigger Hearts: Character traits
When I am trying to help my son understand abstract character traits, (honestly - it's for Scouts, not HOD, which we are starting this school year) - I point out to him when he does it. Yes, sometimes I have to look.. but I'm raising pretty good guys, and they give me something to work with every da...

Re: Help! Questionts About Beyond Before I Order
I know c says /s/ before E, I, and Y. I beleive G has similar rules, excepting single syllable words - fwiw.

Re: Placement advice
I have been doing more looking and praying and working on skills with my DC… still in hopes of finding ‘the perfect place’ for them in HOD. J, age 7.4 – consistently decodes and encodes c/v/c words well. Does not like to write. Some letter reversals, but he recognizes them and says, “oops – backward...

Re: Letter reversals in child who previously did not?
My first thought is, "Is she doing it on purpose - either to get attention or to possibly get out of something?" After that, I'm thinking - is she in art class? I have, on occasion, had my 7 year old (who DOES still have some letter reversal problems) say, "It looks better that way." Finally - has s...

Re: Heart of Dakota curriculum & homeschooling one child
In looking at HOD.. and looking.. and looking.. I think it would be even easier with just one child than with a group. No questions about combining guides, managing three math classes, etc. So far as placing your DD, in my experience, the first place to look is the chart: http://heartofdakota.com/pl...

Re: New LHFHG Guide
I'm looking at LHFHG for my 7 year old - honestly, barring some amazing transformation, it's a given. I was talking to my husband about how worried I was that he was behind his peers in public school. He reminded me he was behind when he started, and he's grown considerably. I think LHFHG will only ...

Re: I miscalculated math!
I would switch to a different curriculum for her. I don't really know what I would pick - but being in a different math helps her other sisters not see that she is 'past' them so obviously. There are other things that go along with Singapore, including Challenging Word Problems. I personally use Mat...

Re: Placement advice
First, can you share a couple of book titles of books he's read recently on his own? He's read all of the Captain Underpants books independently (because I refuse to read them to him!) He's half way through the second of McGuffey's readers. He still likes to read the star wars books in the easy read...

Re: Help with phonics
I use all about spelling as my spelling and phonics curriculum. I tried going the reading then spelling road - and reading has been a fight for us for a year and a half. Through teaching spelling first, reading has come for my 7 year old for the first time in a year and a half that I stopped trying ...

Re: worried to continue on!!!
My wiggle worm has finally made the link between letters and sounds THROUGH spelling - specifically, "all about spelling". It's made such a difference - in reading and spelling - that it will stay in our school day even with HOD. It is expensive, but the subsequent levels are cheaper. After the eye ...

Re: LHFHG's 1st grade FIne Motor books
I read this because my son still falls behind in fine motor - so much so that they are THE reason I'm looking at LH instead of BLH for my 7.5 year old. Logic is a huge strength of his, too, though - and I have found that the card game SET is simultaneously fun and challenging for that area of his br...

Re: Question RE: phonics/reading
My experience comes not from teaching my children - who have both required phonics and LOTS of it... and still hate to read.. but from myself. My mama taught me the letters and sounds in the course of my two/three year old day - I was reading by 3 (Dr. Seuss remains a good friend of mine, and I give...

Bigger VS Preparing
I'm struggling with placement: My 10 year old reads on an end of 3rd/Beginning of 4th grade level. He loves all things science, but our latest fascination is weather and land - earthquakes, volcanoes, etc.. and we'll probably supplement with our current science curriculum, regardless. His spelling i...

Re: 4 grades? I could use your help!
I'm so new to HOD that I haven't ordered my curriculum yet, but I do know that as someone who frequently travels, having most of our books on Kindle has saved my pocketbook many many times, and makes doing school - at least the reading and science side, uber convenient.
