Re: Hit a wall with combining?
Hi! I'm digging up an old post here, but wondering what you decided to do and how it worked out, joyfulhomeschooler? I am in the same boat with Beyond (8yo son and 6yo daughter). Wondering if I should start the process of uncombining them, but not sure how to actually do it. I love the idea of a hom...

Re: habit of attention
Thank you ladies! Asking questions mid-read is a good idea. I've started doing that. I've also gotten them their own square pillow/blanket to sit on during reading times if they are distracting each other too much so they have to sit in one spot apart from each other. Nealewill, how did you split yo...

habit of attention
Hello! I am wondering if anyone has any practical advice about teaching kids the habit of attention? I have two kiddos in Beyond this year and sometimes they like to distract each other while I am reading to them. This also applies to giving them instructions. I don't like to repeat instructio...

Re: Singapore 1A Help
Hello! Math has been the reason for most of my posts! I have one ds (8yo) who just finished 1b today and my dd (6) is 9 weeks into 1a. I also worried about my ds memorizing facts and was given good advice to relax and allow the singapore method to work. I am surprised that the HIG would even mention...

Re: place value, adding with carrying, singapore 1B
Just wanted to update you all on our math status. :D My oldest boy in 1b singapore is doing great again. The "royal fingers" helped him learn to carry over from ones to tens. We are using dimes and pennies now to solve all of his math problems. He can add them quickly, sometimes in under 5 seconds. ...

Re: place value, adding with carrying, singapore 1B
Thank you for the reasurrance that we will make it even when we get stuck sometimes! That is what I need to remind myself. Julie, I will remember your example of how many times you model the hands on activities and have the child do it before moving to the textbook. I think we usually do way less th...

Re: place value, adding with carrying, singapore 1B
Thank you everyone! Julie, your advice in the past about moving on and not staying stuck on one area for too long was good advice! We did that the last time we got stuck and he has been able to move on successfully, even understanding some of those problems now that held him up for so long. We got s...

Re: place value, adding with carrying, singapore 1B
ok, good to know! That is one thing i haven't figured out yet, is how long to sit on a topic when he doesn't quite get it. Or maybe the problem is, I'm not sure what level of understanding to shoot for before moving on. Julie has mentioned before to keep moving through the workbook and not get caugh...

Re: place value, adding with carrying, singapore 1B
thank you for the great ideas! We will try those tomorrow! This idea of carrying seems rather big and important. From what I can tell, it doesn't seem like we will spend enough time on it in the 1b book to really understand it well. Does anyone know if this topic gets taught again? With the same amo...

Re: place value, adding with carrying, singapore 1B
Thank you, Lora Beth, and Stephanie! Lora Beth, to answer one of your questions, I usually have him do all the work. I decided yesterday to do it myself as a change of pace and hopefully, that seeing the addition problems solved several times by me would help his brain understand. I realized that I ...

place value, adding with carrying, singapore 1B
Hello again... I'm here with math questions again. Seems this is the hardest area for us. We are on Unit 30 day 2 of the math plans in Beyond. (singapore 1b). The goal is to add numbers from 0-100. They've also introduced questions with carrying (i.e 82+9). From the beginning, my son (now 8yo...

Let us not grow weary in doing good...
The memory verse for week 2 of Beyond was a God-send for ME! "Let us not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest, if we do not give up." Galatians 6:9 . Week one of beyond was fabulous with my kiddos and week 2 was just a struggle. I don't even know why. Getting my ch...

Thank you ladies! Yes, MelinKansas, we've only been around for about a year. And thank you, raindrops, I would have forgotten to change my signature! Ha!
