Re: Singapore Math 2A and 2B
I am doing Bigger Hearts, so I will have the manual. Glad I won't need the textbooks or home instructor manual. It's always so confusing to see what all is available and decide what is necessary. Thanks for the input!

Singapore Math 2A and 2B
I'm looking into ordering for next year and I have questions about what is needed for 2A and 2B. I see there is a textbook, workbook and a teacher's manual. Are all of these necessary to teach 2nd grade math? What are the thoughts on those who have been through it... I don't like extra books, hence ...

Re: 5 yr old attitude towards school
lissiejo- My problem is not that I’m not tough enough on him. I lay down the law, but sometimes I just need to lay off. My problem is that I’m too tough on him most of the time. He is stubborn and strong-willed, but I am too, so that makes for an interesting time! I struggle with the juggling act. T...

Re: 5 yr old attitude towards school
my3sons- Yes, I have gotten a ton of good advice on here so far! It has been extremely encouraging! I haven’t even started HoD yet, but I’ve been singing their praises, just because of how much I love the help in the forums from so many experienced homeschoolers! :D It’s nice to hear that there is m...

Re: 5 yr old attitude towards school
My 8 yo boy is allergic to the pencil. :) This quote is exactly how I feel about my son... :) Flashcards, educational computer games, scrabble, uno, anything else and he can work with me for longer periods than I expect, but if I pull out a pencil and a workbook, look out! :) I found last night tha...

Re: 5 yr old attitude towards school
twoxcell- I have basically decided to do put away the handwriting workbooks for awhile. I feel like it’s taking a step backwards, personally, but it’s worth a try. I just struggle with quitting working on something, just because he doesn’t want to do it. Maybe it’s just a power struggle between the ...

Re: 5 yr old attitude towards school
Can I first just say what a blessing this forum is for me? I just hope once I have a little more experience in homeschooling with HoD that I will be able to help others who are struggling, just as everyone on here has helped me so far. I have posted questions on other curriculum sites and been lucky...

Re: 5 yr old attitude towards school
glperky- I guess I know he wouldn’t have more fun in school than at home, but I just hate to have to punish him or send him to his room during schoolwork. I try to implement the “I am the teacher, not mommy” during schoolwork, but then, I end up sending him to his room at some point for his attitude...

Re: 5 yr old attitude towards school
It is mainly a school thing, not a character issue. He is extremely helpful and obedient most of the time. Not to say I don't have to ask him to do things twice and remind him that Jesus wants him to have a good attitude, but for the most part, he is a great kid. He is currently basically potty trai...

Re: 5 yr old attitude towards school
mom23- Thank you for your advice. I had been thinking along the same lines, but you wrote it out better than I could have. I had been thinking that maybe his ability to learn is progressing faster than his emotional/mental abilities. I have just struggled with how to keep him learning more, without ...

Re: 5 yr old attitude towards school
Now that he knows how to read on his own, he loves it and wants to do it all of the time. We did have some struggles in the beginning with that too, but it paid off. He also loves any type of game. We play a lot of Uno, Scrabble, Checkers, anything that makes him think and he would go all day long! ...

Re: 5 yr old attitude towards school
I did not do LHTH with him. I just recently found HoD and I'm excited to begin it next year! I'm hoping that setting up a scheduled time each day and having the lesson plans and expectations listed out with LHFHG will change things. From your post, it sounds like it will! I just know that there will...

5 yr old attitude towards school
I have a very strong-willed, yet intelligent 5 yr old son. I have tried to do some school work this year to get him ready for the idea it will be a part of our every day, beginning in August (LHFHG). He is already reading small chapter books independently and is able to count and do simple arithmeti...

Re: Rod and Staff vs. Thinking Skills workbooks
Thanks for all of the advice! I think we may go ahead and get the R&S for the summer and then begin Thinking Skills in August. Although he has done a lot of the patterns, shapes, logic, cutting and pasting and he is able to read the directions himself, it doesn't always mean he FOLLOWS directions li...

Re: Rod and Staff vs. Thinking Skills workbooks
OK, thanks. We have done some schooling this year, but nothing formal. He was in an early learning center while I worked from the time he was born until age 4 and they seem to focus a lot on fine motor skills. They were constantly working with their hands, coloring, cutting, pasting, writing in shav...
